I usually leave my wipers on auto all the time but had wondered what would happen if the wipers were frozen to the screen one cold morning.

Well I found out yesterday. Thankfully the frost let go easily so no damage done. I'd have thought there would have been some temperature-sensing device to disable the function and protect the dim-witted but alas no. I must remember to switch 'em off in the cold weather.

Or am I missing something here?

MB recommend that you leave your wipers in the Off (0) position.....turn them on if it is rainy weather....or if they are needed......newer cars have heated wipers but my manual says OFF for daily use.....I guess they are still trusting us with some intelligence..

As stated in the handbook...

I wonder why manufacturers don't reset the option when the IGN is cycled?

Even with heated front screens and heated wipers, they aren’t preheated for you ready to turn the ignition on. You only need half a brain to check the wipers aren’t frozen to the screen before you get in it.

That’s me screwed then.

Even when it's far below zero, if the wipers activate, it snaps them clean off any ice they've frozen to. Maybe I've just got a hulk motor, but I've never experienced them attempt to move and not manage to. My wipers are on auto, permanently. It's one of the things I like about the car. I never have to worry about the wipers or the lights, I just get in it and drive.

I try to remember, but sometimes I turn the ignition on before turning the wipers off. - It usually results in the wipers moving big pieces of ice backwards and forwards once.

The only problem really is that if the blades are dragging ice around, they're not clearing the glass.

I always try to remember to switch everything off before stopping the engine but it would be very easy to forget.

There must be some sort of inhibitor switch built in surely?

If not I can see claims under warranty as I could find nothing in the hand book saying they must be turned off.

Mind you the manual is a weighty tomb so it could be hidden somewhere in its depths.

If the ice or snow is strong enough to lock the wipers to the windscreen, and if the wipers are on, then there is nothing to stop the wiper motor turning, instant torque, something has to give, either the wiper linkage will slip or the nylon gear inside the motor will be damaged or striped by the turning worm drive.

I leave mine on also.

Probably the reason why I knacker up my blades in the winter.

dont you all hate them auto wipers when the small sensor screen has rain on it but its not raining much and they still run at really fast speeds. does my nut in.

Have to admit i'm not a fan of them i had it on my previous car and they never quite did what they were meant to do even when Merc tried to recalibrate them after i had a windscreen changed and in hard rain they seem to take ages to adjust to go faster i found myself hit they screen wash lightly while they caught up. :wallbash:

In keeping with this thread i always forgot to turn them off so i kept a spare set of wipers in the boot and i still think i have a set of bosch wiper at home for a w211 somewhere.

My current car ticked all my boxes ... no autowipers Tick !

My current car (Lexus) has auto-wipers and their sensitivity can be adjusted 'on-the-fly' via the wiper stalk. Excellent system!
There's also a cluster graphic showing it they are set to auto or to manual. Plus a stalk mounted led.

Auto Wiper sensitivity can be adjusted on all MB I’ve owned.
