I have a W202 C200 96 plate that has an intermittent knocking noise when in 2nd gear. I've only had the car a month and want to service it, would a gearbox oil/ filter change help this? It seems strange it only does it in 2nd and not all the time. Any pointers would be grateful.:thumb:

A gearbox oil & filter change can only do good although I can't see that fixing it. Difficult to know without hearing the noise. Is it the 4 speed auto or the later 5 speed ? 1996 was the year when they changed over to the 722.6 5 speeder.

This will be the 722.6 autobox and is supposed to be sealed for life. It isn't really, see elsewhere. I've never had any issues with the 722.6 and can't really comment any more. Maybe it's low on fluid but if this is the case I'd think you'd have other symptoms and maybe evidence of a leak. Good luck with it.
PS the data card in your service pack should give build details.

Thank you for your help Grahamcol, I live near to H A Lock who are MB specialists so maybe will try them to see if it's something obvious.
The car was bought as a runabout/ project so I'm sure there will be more questions from me posted!!
