Automatic transmision w211

Hi there,
I just wondering,
My automatic transmision on w211 (2007) when is in D mode and I want to decrease (-)the transmision (let us say to4, 3 or to 2) it starts form 1.and then i habe to increase.
Is this the normal? it shouldn't decrease from 4 ....

If it's in D, tapping - should shift down one gear, so into 4 *if* it was in 5th to start with. Further taps will downshift again if still under the red line. If you hold it to - for longer than a tap, it'll downshift into the optimum overtaking gear.

Also, note that you're not directly selecting a gear, but restricting the gear range.
