E Class Coupe 2016
When I purchased my E Class coupe a couple of months ago the MB dealer mentioned the car will need Once in A lifetime automatic transmission fluid change on its second service which cost £695. Seems a lot for transmission fluid.

Don't pay a main dealer, that is scandalous mark up, I had mine done at my local Indy last year and they charged me £230.

I think they meant to say that this is the price for the service plus the ATF change together. £695 just for ATF change does not sound reasonable even for a 9-gang.

Well I do like to get my car serviced by Mercedes while its under the 3 year warranty. My previous experience with Mercedes service departments over the last 25 years is not great. Two cars ago I ordered a C180 which when I looked at it before I took delivery was not what I had actually ordered. Long story but they had to built me another car. Cars are very good but dealer is usually a pain in the neck.

I would think £695 including service and ATF change is probably not to bad if that is the case

Thanks, going by my current annual mileage it may be while till I get to 40K . Meanwhile this story may be of interest ,my previous CLK had a corroded exhaust bracket. Dealer claimed this as a £2000 repair after I protested they suddenly dropped to £200. I decided as it was under warranty or sale of goods act if not covered by warranty they should do it for free. Had and my indie mechanic look at it and the cost would have been£40. MB dealer eventually sent grovelling apology and did it for free.

Every 40K is hardly once in a lifetime for cars which can be expected to easily cover 10 times that distance , and many owners of which will cover that , or more , annually .

I agree.

My 5g fluid was changed at 38k, so I'm going to do it at 76k. Genuine mb oil, filter, etc. cost me less than 100

The MB never mentioned a lifetime was every 40K . These days I do low mileage but in the past I would have done that mileage in under 2 years easily

I thought the change was 75K/5yrs on recent cars?

It's a one-off change as it's designed to get rid of particles etc that accumulate from new. Whether it's valid to only do it once, I don't know.

I had my 2011 W212 ECLASS 350 cdi serviced at MB Ayr
In September. A fluid and filter change was part of the 5year service.

I think that is correct, I'm due a B7 service this month, car has done just under 70k and is 5 years old now and never had an ATF change, online quote is astronomical! Good job my contact at the dealer will price match an indie..

That would be once in the lifetime of the transmission. Not necessarily once in your lifetime or the lifetime of the car.

Major components like engines and gearboxes ought to last the life of the car .

My 300TE-24 had a new short motor at 380K , but was still on its original gearbox when
written off at 430K .

My W114 280E was on original engine and gearbox when retired due to terminal rust at 272K , although on its third clutch by then .

There are plenty of others out there having done better .

my first gearbox oil and filter was done @37K by MB I then had it done by an indi (Wayne gates) at around the 70/80K

Well done, I suspect that you changed the fluids more than once in that lifetime though.

Well the MB dealership maybe right when us oldies get a bill for £695 for the ATF oil change it is a once a lifetime episode as we keel over on the spot.
