I have just checked my ATF level, I was expecting colour to be red or black, I was quite surprised to see it was a yellow colour( like fresh engine oil), is this normal or does Mercedes use this colour of ATF. It certainly looks very clean, no traces of black.

The main thing to check is whether its clear/translucent [ no suspended solids} more than the colour. It possibly means a non MB fluid has been used but if it meets the correct spec then nothing to worry about. I have a vague feeling the Febi stuff may be yellow but can't be certain.

It definately is MB fluid as it is original fluid.

mb fluid is also red

i would get it checked if you are worried

It could be engine oil supplied in your transmission...i work for a Mobile Crane Hire Company who mainly run Liebherr and Demag Cranes..mostly fitted with ZF or Allison type transmissions..depending on working conditions/climate 15/40 engine oil or Dextron ATF may be used..on no account these oils should ever be mixed.

I dipped my autobox the other day using the curtain wire method and it too contains perfectly clear, bright yellow fluid, to the correct level.
I have an invoice in the car's history, from the main dealer in 2006, for a gearbox oil and filter change, yet everyone I speak to, including the same main dealer, says the fluid should be red.
Does anyone know the definitive answer as to what the yellow fluid is?

antifreeze contamination ?

mix some together and see if it goes yellow.

Old ATF turns yellow and does not take long to do it. I believe it it contaminated by the friction plates. The only way to get it red again is to change it a few times over a few miles.

I would not worry too much as it is quite normal. My suggestion is to change the ATF every 40k
