Autotrader - old site

Last week the BCA website changed and is now fancy and slow..... I've just found out why.
2nd Byte.

They only need to mess up this site and ebay and thats me finsihed.

2nd Byte are great at the backroom stuff, databases etc, but their design guys are sh*t. When i was building the all-new JMG site, they put in a bid and a demo to do it against me. Aside from the huge cost, it was a pile of cr*p and JMG's IT Director just laughed! Needless to say I got to keep the contract to build the new one! :)

When they bid for work, they always use the AT feed as their selling point. Seems to work for them initially, but I know a few who've pulled away from them recently.

I HATE the new website and the new dealer system.. I spend twice as long trying to advertise cars and when trying to search on their website it crashes all the time.

Its clunky and hard to use. I sent a long email to them and got no response.

I thought it was just me and my dodgy laptop. Obviously not. I used to waste hours looking at random fantasy purchases on there 'til they changed it, and got my current car off it.

Its the same old 'if it aint broke.....' thing again with websites. Lets see how long it is before they reverse it.

Just to echo the views of others on here, the new autotrader site is utter cr*p. It's awkward and slow and adds nothing over the original site which was simple and worked fine. I can't be ****d using the new site as it always crashes my machine or runs so slow I give up the will to live. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!!

Haven't found the new BCA site anymore difficult to use though, and not any slower on my machine... the auctionview thing is now free for everyone though, which will probably lead to busier auctions and higher prices:wallbash:

I spent a lot of time on it looking for my new car last week. The site is so poor in so many ways. Worst of all it would crash every 4-5 searches. How dull was it having to reload the page and reset all the variables each time. Then for each search a 'featured' car with no resemblance to my search criteria would be at the top of each page.

Whilst they tinkered with the colours they still failed to fix bigger issues. Dealer advertising cars with 99000 miles as having 99 miles so as to appear at the top of searches.

Dull dull dull. They've clearly lost touch as to what the users want. But for as long as they advertise cars that Ebay don't, I'll continue to use them sadly.

I've been speeking to the company recently who were responsible for the new Autotrader site.... we we're planning on buying their software for a large sum of money. Maybe we won't after reading this set of posts.

its the same story all over the internet forums, for example do a search on the honestjohn forums.

You're welcome!! If we all pass the word around, AT will discover that loads of people are using the old site - might help!

I agree, the new site is painfully slow and the old one is much more usable. That doesn't change the fact the old one could have been improved quite a bit. As a buyer, I think the way eBay presents car ads is probably the closest to what works best for me.

Thanks for the link, although I've now bought my car and will just have to ban myself from window shopping until the bank account has had time to recover... ;)

Ian.

Well ive got a meeting with someone from Auto Trader early in December to discuss the issues.

Keep the feedback coming guys, ive forwarded a link to this thread to the guys at Auto Trader.

About a year I remember each advertisement had a button that could be clicked to report a suspicious advertisement. With an increasing number of clearly false advertisements this button needs bring back.

SNIP( from t'internet);
2nd Byte, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Trader Media Group which publishes over 70 weekly titles including Auto Trader, provides products and services to the automotive used car industry to help consumers locate their perfect used vehicle.

UNSNIP.....

...So 2nd byte are one and the same as Autotrader.....sounds like they only have themselves to blame for the crapness that is the new Autotrader...

Well 2nd Byte do have the same parent as AT (they were independent and then bought by Trader Media) but they run autonomously from TM and as I understand it, AT can use a different company if they wished. 2nd Byte are not imune to good kick up the ... !

I also sent my feedback early on, when the site had just been redeveloped. Pretty much everyone that I know uses it much less frequently. Autotrader used to be the first stop for spending time researching/looking for cars. I would now say my first stop is pistonheads, or online forums, simply due to to ease of use. I simply cannot believe how bad it is, surely the demise of the printed weekly magazine should've ensured they made their website more accessible and easy to use...

It's all to-do with the way the site is phyically coded, they are using a search engine platform to make it all work, this is wrong in my optionin as they've been sucked in with sales man talk to buy a very expensive search platform and it's basically not up-to the job.

The whole site looks like its been developed by a blind person.

The colour palette simply couldn't be worse. The layout, design and even the process flow appear to have been designed by an absolute beginner.

I also wrote to them about it but heard nothing back.

The only improvement I have noticed is that you can now search for newly listed cars within your search criteria (which was long overdue).

thank you so much

for the old site URL. the new one is so bad I just stopped using autotrader. as I work in new media i did try to pass some constructive feedback to the web team but when i followed their contact us "feedback/comments" section there is a specific question about whether i thought the site was bad or not. as soon as i indicated this the site crashed. hmmmmmmmm, bet there are not many negative comments reaching the IT Director. nice one webbies. might use that tactic myself.
