Just been perusing ebay and came across a CLK. 5 years old with 70k miles and described as low mileage.

In my head 70k in 5 years isn't what I would call low.
I know average used to be around 12k a year is that still the case?

Wondered what you thought.

Take 10-12K to be average. 70K in 5 years is definately high mileage.

Glass's Guide used to say average miles was 15k in the first year and 12k per annum thereafter. So on that basis, a five year old car with average mileage would be 63k.

70k is not low!

I go along with Dieselman,
10 - 12000 miles per annum and over that car traders will start penalising the owner. That is just into the high mileage bracket.

Did you see the CLK highlighted by Mikel. I cannot recall the mileage etc, but it certainly looked the part.

I see they are now putting the new 320CDI into the CLK ;)

Go for it you know it makes sense. I have just been reading how junior ranking Police Officers are now earning in excess of £100,000 per annum (including overtime) No doubt commission from all the revenue camera's out there.

Sorry for my cheeky sense of humour (I'm in loads of pain)

Regards,
John the cheeky

Perhaps all of those 70k miles were done at sea level? :p

Sorry, couldn't resist, I get me coat.

For me average annual mileage is 1800 miles, roll on pay as you drive.

I think it depends on what type of miles!

70k motorway miles in the hands of a "good" owner (i.e everyone here, obviously) might not be too bad.

70K grinding & thrahing through Sarf London traffic, potholes in the hands of Del Trotter would be terrible

Just to add my two penneth.........70k would not freak me out nowadays...yes its a higher average than normal, but with build quality nowadays 70k is probably like 25k on a car 15 years ago.

I read a report recently by the guy who heads up Glasses Guide, the Trade Bible, and he mentioned that any modern car nowadays is capable of hitting 300,000 miles before its fit for the knackers yard.

He says that as long as a car has been serviced to the specified intervals then engine wise you should not have a problem....naturally you will have to replace shocks, suspension parts etc etc along the way, but thats to be expected. Modern oils, computer aided design and testing are seen as the main contributors to this turn of events.

He goes on to say that the only reason older cars are worth nothing is down to image and buyers always wanting to have the latest model of whatever it may be.

This article then went on to say how there is now a marked increase in the number of people giving up more expensive cars and jumping into 10 year+ old cars and just running them until they drop as you avoid depreciation and many 10 year old cars have all the items you want such as Air con, ABS etc etc, but without some of the sophisticated electrical systems that make new cars nowadays such a problem to fix when they go wrong......the current E Class being a case in point.
