hi ive just brought a 06 b180 cdi se w245 and noticed when checking the oil level which was ok , and with to bonet open i turn off the engine and restart and all is well then after aprox 40 seconds it rattles like a solinoid kicks in and activates something its like a noisy fan bearing, but its not a fan and i have sent it back to the dealer i got it from and they thought it might be the diesel pump but this was removed and tested and ok, they took the belts off run it up still there ! and has had the cat checked along with the turbo as the sound sounds like its from the front of the engine and has a slight rotating noise its not a heat sheild ! it does it hot or cold and every time you switch it off and back on and at exactly the same time every time , if anyone has one or a b200 could they have a listern its not loud and cant really be heard inside you have to have the bonet open the car runs very well and has no lack of power etc, im starting to think its normal as it does not effect the car but if anyone can help or confirm this would be great, :thumb:

there must be someone out there with a b180 cdi or a b200 cdi i think even the a-class 180 cdi has the same engine might even be the same as a c-200 cdi !

i guess i will have to chat to my self on this one ! ive got a diesel tuning box k&N filter and some genuine mb oil and fuel filters coming to service it and going to use mobil1 5w30 esp,,, and i think the noise is how they all are as its to presice when it swiches on or kicks in.. i will post a report on the tuning box and filter see what i get to the gallon etc ! which is all ready good i get just over 50mpg on a run and 37 ish on the school run.

hi im not that advanced and would not know how to record and post it ? by experance listerning to noises on line sounds terrable anyway and this is just slight ! so prob would not show up.

im not that worried now i fitted my k&n filter and diesel tuner ! and changed my filters and oil and is hardly noticable now but what is !! is the mpg it now feels more responsive and feels instant and if you can belive this and my mpg compurter i got 72mpg on a long run it was very addictive whatching it keep going and going but that was after 50miles run at just over 65 mph and cruseing at 80mph gave a good 52 mpg and driving it hard which is a transformation as i thought it was a bit of a slug before but now its fun to drive and has a real rush as the turbo kicks in and really pulls hard and can easerly pull away in second gear now, feels like more 139 bhp as the instructions listed ! this took me a while as the tuner has 8 settings and trying each one right up to seven and a few calls to the seller was finally set on seven and was told mercs respond better to the higher settings and if the trip computer is right which with my workings out so far and the way the fuel guage is behaving is very encourageing my avarage is in the 56mpg and the worst i can get is 47mpg which is very very good im well pleased and can easerly get 60 ish without trying ,, happy days well worth the £95 !!72mpg !! lol,, thats unberlivable.

sod the noise there obviously nothing wrong with the engine !!!

Just tried this on my B200 CDI but do not get the problem you seem to be getting.

Still your performance does not seem to be affected.

My MPG on a 220 mile mainly motorway trip gave 46.5 at total average speed of 62

The Bs do have a fairly noisy diesel engine

I would also be interested in knowing what your chip mod was as it sounds good

Hi,
Just seen this thread- sorry you did not get much help on here. There are A class forums which might give you more info. There are not many B owners on here.
The C200cdi is a different engine.
Glad you had success in tuning the lump
