One of the chrome "Bluetec" letters was about to fall off so I removed it with the intention of replacing it.
Having thought about it I think I will just remove the Bluetec letters, this is the only thing that says its a diesel.
How do I remove the adhesive residue from the tailgate?

Thank you all, I have WD40 and tar & Bug remover amongst other things. Flowrider99, I can assure you that on no occasion whilst driving this car have I seen any smoke coming from the exhaust.
Unlike a Passat PD130 that we had from new in 2003. Accelerating from a junction anything following would disappear in a cloud of smoke;)

Use dental floss to work behind the letters.
