Sill badges protective film

This is the first car I’ve bought in a decade and a half, I’m facing a learning curve.
Sorry about the Lane and Traffic sign Assist, and all those other daft noises

I’m getting used to the beeps and bongs, haven’t yet identified them all.

It occasionally terrifies me by suddenly slamming the brakes on hard as I’m backing into my garage, which involves deliberate clearances down to three or four inches. We can just about squeeze both cars in between carefully arranged piles of junk.

I’ve not yet figured out which specific ‘assistant’ to thank for that scary and needless braking. Will probably leave it enabled though and learn to predict its behaviour, not sure I could face the shame of disabling it and then hitting something solid.

Our W205 doesn't slam the brakes on but it slows the car down if moving past a very close obstacle like the garage door pillars at a speed it considers unsafe! The first time this happened I thought there was an engine or gearbox issue :D

The 'brake assist' (?) functionality gives a flashing red light in the cluster if you drive to close to the vehicle in front, a 'bong' if it's getting worried (occasionally triggered by a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction at junctions or on narrow roads), and in theory it will slam the brakes on if it thinks it needs to. Never had this happen though. I keep meaning to try reversing into a big cardboard box to see if it cuts in then!

I now know it’s the Close Range Braking function that slams on the anchors while reversing into the garage. It actually told me so in plain English, on the centre display.

It’s a feature of Manoeuvring assistant, and seems to be specifically intended to stop me reversing over unseen pedestrians who might have set up camp in my garage. And it can be specifically disabled, if I so choose.

That being the case, I’m not sure a cardboard box would work for testing, I need an actual human volunteer. If I hear the crackling of shattered bones, as my volunteer’s legs get squashed against the workbench, I’ll know I have tamed the assistant’s behaviour. :)
