Bagged myself a doner...Finally

Dont wimp out - do the aircon as well!

A new aftermarket condensor, evaporator and r/d won't cost more than £300 and would mean you're replacing most of the parts that commonly fail

If you have the dash for the evaporator out you could modify the speaker mounts to take decent front speakers at the same time

So retrofitting aircon in a non-ac car isn't that difficult?

I think we know what your next upgrade on your latest 124 will be Charles. Quite a number of 124s were retrofitted with AC when new. Not so long ago ccbenz had a supply of original Behr systems for the 124. If I remember correctly they were charging around £1700 fitted - might well be wrong about the price though.

Not likely - just intrigued by Nick's comment. About the only planned upgrade is transferring the stereo system from my last car - I can't bear the tinny sound of the current one, and the Blaupunkt has the really irritating feature of defaulting back to a preset volume level, so every time I get in the car I have to turn it right up. Not a patch on a Becker!

Taking the engine out of the doner should be the priority surely?

..to fit into my coupe? If it were lower in miles i would consider but not at this moment in time.

I'm actually content with the 220, it gives me more than enough poke for my motoring needs. Also i dont want to veer away from the cars originality - interior mods etc fine for me but engine swaps, not sure.

I actually plan to flog off the engine + the gear box as a whole.

Any takers? 140k (136k to be exact) 13 MB stamps and 3 independent.
As to the rest of the car once I'm done with it flog off the rest of the bits.

Will also have my complete mushroom coupe interior too to flog.

Mechanically all want from it is the steering box and diff. Have them referbed sitting and waiting for a rainy day.

Surely its hard! ive had a look at the set up and it looks painful as already mentioned!

There are MANY car a/c firms out there, that retrofit for cars without any. If you have the right bits already, it would be a breeze. Most of the evap coil would fit under the dash surely. But I wouldn't give up on it, especially if its all ready been de-gassed hasn't it ;) ;). You've only got to take the bits off. (wear gloves though ;) ;) )

The diff will be a different ratio to the one in your car.

pics of donor interior,

Started stripping down the car today,

Here are some pics of the interior, the heated seats work a treat, they get quite warm quickly!

..never knew the back rest gets warm as well, thought it was just the squab.

I am surprised at the comments re the cruise control .

The systems on every Merc I have had really are very simple comprising - the stalk , the amplifier , pickup from the back of the speedo , throttle actuator , all with standalone loom which can easily be removed/retrofitted .

Perhaps you need to source CC from an earlier W124/126/201 and retrpfit ?

I was having a look for the amp while the knee panel on the drivers side was out. There isnt any thing there? As has been said there maybe somthing in the passengerside footwell. Not got to the passenger side of things yet.

It may confirm to be true the car ECU does it all if nothing is found. I will have to chase looms i think on this!

When you mention 'pick up from the back of the speedo' Do you mean speed sensing of some sort?

I'm not sure if im on the right track here but does 'Gerber sensor' have anything to do with this.

On the back of the speedo of the 320 this bit is blanked off. Its not connected to anything - on my 220 the 'Gerber' bit is connected which when unplugged from the speedo it takes form of what looks like a magnet of somesort.

I hope you didnt rag that E320 just because its a donor car, 124 love man... treat like a lady! :)

Yes , they pick up a speed signal from a sensor on the back of the speedo ( only fitted to cars with CC ) . I had not noticed the word 'Gerber' but it is a coil which picks up magnetic impulses from the speedo .

The system may well have changed on later cars but is as I described on all 1980's era Mercs . Earlier cars , like my W123 coupe had a vacuum assisted actuator so were different again .

Im not going to lie, i had a bit of fun in it. And im going to be very true and say it is a MASSIVE difference without a doubt.

when you want to chill and just drive it lets you, when you want to get a bit brave, the thing is a beast, it sounds awsome too. Those two extra pots really does make a difference. But not enough to make me do a swap. :)

I'll just buy one complete if the right one comes along and im in the market now that ive had a proper chance to get accostom to it.

Thanks, i'll have a further look into the CC set up on the car. The aftermarket system with OEM stalk will do the job im sure so i have options.

The interior in that donor car looks lovely BTW .

I find it strange a 140k car with leather in this good a nick. Its 100% original too, no referb or dye.

first owner was a lady.

Got the original sales reciept from back in Aug 1995.

....Cost 45k Brand new!

Cruise ECU?

Whats this?

Is this the cruise control ECU?

Hi

EPC lists it as Control Unit Cruise/Idling Control used with four speed transmission

Thanks guys,

Im now wondering if this is what is referenced to in some cases as an 'amp' or the cruise 'ECU'?

Based on the description of 'control unit', its gotta be right?

....further enhanced by 'used with four speed transmission' - no indicators saying its specifically used for the 320 or an M104?

Can anybody tell me that by using this all i would have to do is source an actuator for the 220?

A tricky one this, but i hope we can get somewhere!
