If someone could please point me in the right direction I would be very gratefull, I've tried googling it but it keeps coming up with tools to download and they look like trouble!
I just want to run the built in defrag but cant figure out how to do it!:o

Start
My Computer
Select the correct hard drive and Right click
Tools -> defragment

So simple I cant believe I didn't see it. Thanks balge, dieselman and piff for the help.

The clever/dumb balance is restored.

This might be a good thread to remind you all that xp goes out of extended support in April.

If you keep running XP beyond this date you will rapidly become vulnerable to exploits that wont be getting patched with security updates.

I seriously suggest you have an upgrade plan in place before this date.

Windows 8?:D

I wouldn't know where to begin. I'm 28 and my father knows more about computers than I do! My friends despair.

Hmm, maybe Windows 7 and see what 9 brings!

If you stay on XP, the tirds will reverse engineer the first set of patches after 08/04/14 for Fista onwards and see if any apply to XP and then create exploits which you are going to be praying your (hopefully) up-to-date antivirus and anti-malware software will scrape off for you...

Just ensure any computer you use to browse the Internet on, or receive email on (via Outlook Express or Outlook - if you don't know what these are - unlikely to affect you) is not running Windows XP.

To check, go to START > RUN and type in WINVER and hit OK.

If you do have it, post up with what you have and there are a few on here who can advise if it is worth upgrading or buying a replacement computer.

Version 5.1 (build 2600.xpsp_sp3_qfe.130704-0421 service pack 3

email is just on gmail

Its just for personal use nothing business related.

Yup - that's the version which will be defunct!

Gmail is not hosted locally so that is fine.

However, if you browse the Internet on it - you run the risk of a drive-by (getting stung visiting a compromised website or similar) or other such nasties invading your PC...

I dug up my XP disc last night as I couldn't remember if it was 32 bit or 64 bit.
No details on the disc:dk:

Had a look at system properties and found the processor is listed as AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ 2.90GHz

Presumably that means it is a 64 bit system:o

Hmmm
Just been here and it seems my version of Windows is 32 bit.

When I change, is there any advantage to going 64 bit or am I best to remain 32 bit?

Having tried 32 and 64 bit W7 you might as well use 64bit - simply because it would allow you to run more RAM than 32bit systems. There are very few 64bit applications but it handles 32bit programs perfectly well.

No advantage changing to 64bit XP, I mean when you but a replacement system btw
