Bike racks

Roof-mounted works well on the C Class, especially if on the lower AMG suspension 👍

I get 3 bikes up there no problem, and it’s quick to mount/dismount without the need for steps.

We have a Saris Bones Ex 3 bike rack which we use on a GLA & C Class.Takes 3 bikes & is well designed, simple to use and sturdy.

Just taken the bikes over 1,000 miles across France with no problems

I have used a Thule towbar mounted 4 bike carrier in the past and it was rock solid. I have also used (and am a big fan of) Saris racks that clamp onto the rear of the vehicle. (I have a 3 bike and a 2 bike Saris Bones.) However, I have just bought (eBay) a set of original roof bars & 4 bike racks for my 2012 CLS Coupé and the instructions that came with it have upset my OCD tendencies! 😂 I feel a new thread coming on. I can actually fit the 4 racks on the bars, but not in a way that accurately matches the MB instructions. This grieves me! If anyone has pictures of how they did it on their kit please do share!

Bike rack on the back of the caravan if it doesn’t have a widow there. Our Swift has the Thule mounting bars there already.

There are also suction or vacuum mount bike carriers to consider. Seasucker is a brand name (£££) but ebay has generic suction bike mounts.

I opted for this arrangement on my X5, using these:

ROCKBROS Suction Bike Rack Car Roof Bike Rack Bicycle Carriers for Cars Roof Bike Carriers Roof Mounted Bike Rack Quick Release Aluminium Alloy Bicycle Holder with Sucker https://amzn.eu/d/4unInj5

However, you do have to remove and store the front wheels and the mount is easily removed - I’m going to safety wire mine to the roof bars (I’m using a roof bar to secure the rear wheel) so they cannot easily be removed/stolen.

Oh, and I’ll have a step ladder in the boot!!

OK if it's designed to take a bike rack (as some are), but not a good idea otherwise. Caravan panels are very lightly constructed with internal reinforcement only where specifically needed, and a carrier with a couple of full-size bikes on it will exert considerable force if you go over a bump in the road. You obviously need enough spare payload for the extra weight of carrier plus bikes (without going over the MTPLM), and it will reduce stability to some extent. Better to carry them on the tow vehicle if you can, IMHO.

We’ve got a saris porter2 that we use on the rear of the sq5. Will also fit on the c class but have no real need to try.

I have this rack which is surplus to requirements.
It's a Halfords - Fits well on the rear of my W211 E280 cdi Estate.
One of the locking handles is a bit stiff, but it works OK.
Rated by Halfords for three bikes.
I'm unlikely to ever use it again.
No reasonable offer refused.
PM me if interested.
Location - Central Leeds.
Try before you buy.
