Hi all

Just wondering how much you would expect to pay have the injector re seated (is that what they do) due to black death on 1 injector?

Also, people talk of a chuffing sound. What does that sound like? Is it obvious?

Thanks

The chuffing sound is quite distinctive Philip. With the bonnet up listen to the top of the engine whilst it is at tickover. If the injector seal is leaking you will hear the compression gasses leaking past the seal of the offending injector (the distinctive "chuff") You will also tend to smell an exhaust/diesel smell.

Thanks for that.

I only just bought this OLD 320 cdi and today changed the thermostat hence first removal of the covers.

There is a lot of hard tar like substance, but I couldn't hear anything amiss with the engine. Obviously its a diesel, but no chuffing or hissing.

It has had a lot of work on the past and I suppose it could be old tar pre fix, but surely they would have cleaned the mess up (or not, as lots of garages are lazy)!

The tar like stuff is the black death. Check the injector around which the tar is located. Hold your hand over it to feel the chuffing.

Contrary to myth...it doesn't mean death, and when cold is actually easy to clear off with a flat blade screwdriver.

About £50 to fit a new washer and re-seat.

Thanks Mr Renault!!

I assume it must have been leaking for a long time, to get that much tar?

Odd thing is, its full MB history. Would have thought they would have fixed it.

Can't always tell if the covers have not been removed for a while. The chuffing is obvious but may be masked by the tar. As above around £50 is average for this job, however be prepared to pay more if the injector is stuck.

Tip - remove as much of the 'tar' as possible, will save labour costs on cleaning. Cold engine, chip away with a flat head screwdriver.

Difficult to say.

Often owners carry-out only the bare minimum required to get a stamped book (paper or electronic) but at the same time refuse any additional work flagged-up by the garage.

Full dealer history is obviously better than no history, but in itself it is not a guarantee and no substitute to having the car properly checked before purchasing it.
