Clean diesel in injector wells

Hi all

I noticed a small leak on the drive under the engine and know that it is diesel. I took the engine cover off and although very clean I can see that where the injectors sit there is some small build up of diesel. ( I cleaned it up with some paper towel and it’s completely clean liquid, no Black Death carbon build up). Ive also noticed that the back 2 injectors are worse with the front one having no diesel around it.

I’m thinking it’s the little fuel return lines that clip into the injectors that maybe leaking but I can’t see anything actually leaking. The tops of the back 2 injectors do appear to look a little damp though, would this suggest it could be the return lines? Causing the top of the injectors to seem damp?

Maybe completely unrelated but I have what sounds like a noisy fuel pump, gurgling sound with the ignition on but not started. I’ve read a few posts mentioning this and people had resolved it by replacing the return lines. Apparently if the small o rings go then it lets air into the system via this point causing the noise.

Any help or experience of this appreciated

Its called a leak off pipe and repair version is available from MB. Its very likely to be the cause of the leak.

Great, thanks for the reply. I’ve seen some other threads where people have replaced the leak off pipe but MB don’t supply a connector to attach to the rest of the pipe. What would be the best connector to use for this?

Are you sure they don't? I am pretty sure they do a repair section.

sometimes cracked nozzle holder cap will cause leak to injector foot (and yes later black death)... back wells are worse because drain line is on the back of the engine, I believe its slightly inclined...

I’ve taken a couple of pictures. I’m thinking because the top of the injector is damp even after wiping it down yesterday it’s looking more like the leak off pipe?

Yes, called them today. Unfortunately they don't provide a connector, just the pipe. Would a plastic straight push fit fuel line connector be ok for this? As presuming its low pressure on the return side.

I should think so.

I would clean up with white spirit,
monitor closely with engine running to confirm where the leak originates.

The photo shows the leak off push in without its 'o' ring.
On engine rebuild mine was passing at an 'o' ring. Replacements are available.
Careful though, my new 'o' rings were a real bitch to re insert, so that the push in retainers would latch. Breakage was easy.

Thanks to all those who offered their advice. It seems it was the leak off pipe. The one on the back injector had completely broken down inside and came out in 2 parts, well I had to carefully fish it out.

On a side note with the new pipe connected I have no more gurgling from the fuel tank area with ignition on so it would seem that air was getting into the system at this point.
