Can any one know the name of these 4 type fixings that hold the number plate surround on to my W124 E class 1989 260E boot lid . Wanted a new plate surround for some time .Started on it today , and three of the screws came out no problem, but the last acrew sheared off . The item is made of aluminum 3/8 diam and 1/4 high with a thread in the centre .They fit in a hexigon hole in the boot lid retained with a nut from inside the boot lid .Or better still as any one as got one .I will pay a good price or one.

Hi Optimusprime,

I think these are called rivnuts.
I'm not sure that they're held with a screw from the inside of the boot lid. As far as I'm aware the number plate screw passes through the number plate and screws directly into this holding everything in place.
Can you post photographs of exactly what you're after as I may be able to help?

Watch from what i can see it as one screw that attaches the surround to boot lid.I could not fathom it out , only one screw .As i removed the screw that ran though the surround it broke. So i had to drill it out .Then the drill bit broke. I had to remove it by force.Thinking about it it is a rivet of some kind. But on the end inside the boot its formed like a nut.And it is threaded.

wi24cab i am new to the forum and would not know how to .If i can explain loking at the boot without any plate or surround on there is 4 round aluminium protrusions sticking out .In the boot looking at the inside of it you can see 4 nuts.Thinking about it it must be a rivet. In the boot lid it as a hexigon hole to stop it moveing as you lock it up. Thanks lads i will doctor a retainer up to look like the others solved.Like Watchcme as explained in his post.

Hi ,
If you send me some contact details, name and address to my email [email protected] I'll send you 4 genuine Mercedes Benz ones in the post .
I'm not looking anything for them.
I replaced them on my own 124 and had to order a minimum of 12....... So you're more than welcome to them.
Kindest meantime,
John.

W124cab big thanks

W124CAB is sending me four of the boot fixing rivnuts .:thumb:To fix the surround to my boot of the mercedes . This is very nice of the gentleman. The time i have been looking for this item, i could have done more to the car.But it will be back to original after i fit the part on .Also i will put a bit of grease in the thread,so that the surround will come off easy next time. Never fit a dry screw, you dont know when you might want to remove it.Car builders dont think about this ,its only the owner in a few years after he wants to replace the item. :D

W124 CAB just had the rivnuts in the post, that you so kindly sent me .I can now get it ready for its MOT on Wednesday . I cannot thank you enough .You have my contact information dont hesitate to email me if you think i can help you with anything. Regards Trev
