CLA 220D AMG
Hi guys, I'm new here.. I just bought a CLA 220D AMG line, 64 plate. It came with some service history, but no evidence of a timing chain being done. Its done just over 116k miles.. Am I living on borrowed time? should I get this sorted asap? Any ideas what it would cost roughly at an approved garage? Thank for you time boys..

Relax, my CLK had the same engine and was still OK at 150,000 miles, ask again when you reach 200,000 or more.

I don't think these engines have a specified interval for replacing the timing chain... it should be replaced when it starts rattling.

No harm in doing it preemptively though, if you wish.

I like your confidence, cool.. I was just a little worried as people say they should be renewed at 100k. This makes me feel better..

OK, cool.. There's no odd noises at present, and I don't mind doing a bit of preemptive measures.. (prevention is better than cure, my dad always said!) But if it can wait a few weeks then that would be better for my wallet! Thanks for the advice!

No point changing it unless it’s rattling.

My E250 CDI is on 173K and still perfect.

Are we talking about the same engine here? OM646 [CLK] or OM651 [CLA] big difference in timing chain design/position

My E250 has the OM651

Who are these "people"?

Is it Mercedes? If not then I would follow manufacturers advice. A cam chain (especially a Duplex one) does not wear like a belt.

Dealt with in more detail in this thread on here.
OM651 timing chain @76k miles, to replace or not?
Early versions of the engine appear to have had problems but resolved in later versions with improved components such as chain tensioners. Early warning signs of timing chain noise should prompt action but otherwise regular oil and filter changes with good quality oil of the recommended viscosity should ensure a long life. One thing to bear in mind is that timing gear wear is governed by several things, not just mileage. An engine running fairly constantly at revs well below its limit is going to place less strain on its timing gear than one undergoing multiple stop/starts or constantly having the nuts revved off it!;)

Brilliant.. Tbh, I drive around at 60 most of the time, like an old man but occasionally feel the need to be thrown back in my seat! Lol

Its just what "people" say isn't it?! I remember a couple of guys I used to work with that tinkered with cars used to say..

Really?

Anyway people who "tinker" with cars are hardly the ones I would trust in terms of recommending major engine work based on no specific or validated knowledge or experience of that particular engine.. As said, consult a specialist MB mechanic for proper advice.

I thought the timing chains never need replaced one of the reasons I kept my old w203 cdi. It's on 260k but I suspect it was clocked back so could be closer to 300k . No issues with the timing chain... I am looking to replace it with a w211 which I think are better build than the w212
