Hello,

I just bought a 250 TD (pre E class) 1986 2.5 manual mercedes. It was a monday mornign ebay thing so didnt get to try it before I bought.

When you pull away it feels bouncey, like front to back (not up and down) as though there is a bit of rubber somwhere in the drive shaft - if you give it some welly its fine, or if you slip the clutch a bit more than normal its fine also... is this normal?

There are rubber couplings in the drive shaft but they normally wear and clonk.
I'm not really sure what you mean by bouncy?

err how do I describe this - sorry not so good at this!

its like you are gently coming off and on the power - you sort of rock in the seat forwards and backwards. If you give it some wellie its not noticeable, and if you slip the clutch a bit its fine too, its almost as though the prop is twisting up, then unwinding, then twisting then unwinding if that makes sense.

someone just mentioned engine/gearbox mounts, plus the guy I bought ti from said he thought they may need doing.. I live in north Hampshire (Basingstoke) are there any good (read cheap) independant parts dealers near here?

Ideally a friendly place that knows when I describe what the problem is will know what's wrong, or even better double check things for tea/coffee/beer money then sell me the parts to do it myself?

Thanks and sorry for being stupid!
Matthew
