Hi

I happened to have some business in a Hyundai garage in Ukraine the other day and spotted a few old shape Lada for sale brand new still in the wrapper:thumb: I had enquired before and was told they had stopped making them. If it had have been rhd i would have found it difficult to resist the temptation to purchase.;)

Question is...........would an equivalent W210/208 of had wheel arches as rust free as those? ;)

Do you know how much those Lada's were?

Bingo!

My Mum won one of those at Bingo in the eighties.

It was billed as a £3500.00 prize.

Trouble is, the majority of the people who actually owned Lada's would never have that sort of ready cash.

So after contemplating offers of say £5 a week for the 20 years she sold it for around £1500.00 cash.

A nice bargain for someone.

£1500.00 is still a nice pick up though. :thumb:

And the price was??

If that floats your boat, you would have loved the 1970's Moskvitch I saw in the Netherlands on Sunday.. on the A1 between Amsterdam and Hengelo.

I was busy hating my cheapo rental car (Hyundai i10) but after comparing it to the guy in the Moskvitch I suddenly felt like I was in the lap of luxury..

Cheers,

Gaz

Ok

I will drag myself back kicking and screaming tomorrow (if i have time) to find out the price.
Should have asked whilst i was there.

Ok, so you guys know (I'm the absolute expert on Russian autos as I spend so long there every year!) The Lada Classic (the one based on the old FIAT 124) is no longer built by Lada, (see Lada's latest range here LADA ?????????? ??? ??????????? ???? ??? ''???????'' ??? "???????". ??????????? ???? but IS still built under licence by a small assembly company called IZH Auto who build a few other old cars also! See their site here: ÈÆ-Àâòî - Ìîäåëüíûé ðÿä They used to be built by a company called RUSLADA, which my wife used to work for and I actually got to see them being built on the production line in a town called Syzran, on the Volga river.

For the Ukraine market the Lada Classics are still made at the old Zaporzhets factory although I believe they now only make the Samara model, so these ones in the dealer were probably made late last year.

We still see LOADS of them running around although non Russian cars are becoming more and more popular (especially Korean, Chinese and Japanese), despite the government levying huge taxes on imported cars!

So, there you have it!

Just an addition to my above note, my wife has just spoken to someone in Russia who says the Classic model, known as the "Lada 2107" is still being made by a company in Chechnya called Argun Factory!! Amazing isn't it! Over 40 years old and still going strong!!!

Do you remember Eddie Torrens in Ballymoney buying all the Ladas in NI and shipping them back home to Russia

My ex wifes best girlfriend used to drive a 2 stroke Wartburg Knight. It was the worst car I have ever been driven in. At 50mph it made so much noise and vibrated so badly that to go any faster would have been impossible.
And yet she loved it and decorated the interior with countless fluffy toys.

Two words to beat you all
Hillman Imp.

And it was made in THIS country (latterly in Jockland (Linwood)).

Ah yes, Hillman Imp. They had that funny little heater thing under the boot floor to cook your shopping before you got home, right?
