Breakdown cover ?

Renewal of my AA cover is due but I have a question about breakdown cover. I tow a caravan and was wondering if anyone out there has had experience of breaking down, ( vehicle that is ! ), whilst towing. I can't get a positive answer from the AA about what happens to the caravan.
The Caravan Club promote Mayday which is run by Green flag and they say they will take the car and caravan to your holiday destination and if the car can't be fixed whilst there, they will return both car and 'van home afterwards.

Not really. I asked if anyone had experience of this situation. My problem with Green Flag is that you can get any old back street garage respond. My last call out to the AA saw a wreak of a recovery wagon arrive with a guy who just about knew one end from the other, didn't have a clue about the fault and scraped the alloys on the kerb during the short journey home, That was after calling the AA. I made it clear that I wanted only an AA person to attend next time !
I'm just looking for experiences of an actual event please. On paper, yes it looks like Mayday would be favourite !

I have Mercedes Mobilo cover on our tow cars, but I also have Mayday (through the Caravan Club, provided by Green Flag) because there are length limits (or used to be) with the other recovery companies, and our caravan exceeds them.

The only I direct experience I have is around ten years ago, a friends Freelander broke down on the journey to Bude. Through Mayday, Greenflag towed him to site, and towed the car to a local garage. As the car hadn’t been fixed by the end of the holiday, they towed the car and caravan 250 miles home.

Whilst this predates the Mobilo switch to RAC, it could be any local garage attending to a Mobilo covered breakdown, and I dare say that the RAC now subcontract Mobilo calls if necessary, so it may be difficult to avoid being attended to by a local recovery guy.

Being in the AA, as you say, does not guarantee an AA person to respond, if thats actually worth anything. 2 years back myself, wife and dog about 40 miles out on M6 and aux drive belt let go (Rav4). Not wanting to stop on the hard shoulder of a busy motorway I managed to limp to the next services. As we were not deemed 'priority' we were kept waiting 6 hours before an AA man arrived. I'd told them a new fan belt would sort but the guy didn't have one. He admitted had he been informed by his control earlier he would have picked one up at a local factors but now too late. He left and eventually an independent recovery truck arrived with no room in the cab for the dog, who would have to travel alone in the car on the truck. Yeah right! Had to get my son to come out to collect my wife and the dog and ferry her back home while I rode with the truck. AA? Never again.

Many thanks for this comment. I have been undecided, but now your friend's experience has tipped the balance ! I don't anticipate having any mishaps, but you never know. Mayday, Mayday !

Thanks for that. As we also have dogs, ( two ), it is a relevant factor. With yours and Saff's response, I have decided that Mayday is the one for me. Many thanks to you and all who have responded, even the silly ones ! Cliff
