Purchased a 2002 ML320 and have found the ashtray will not open
Is there a way to get into this without forcing it

I assume it is simply a case of pressing it and it should soft open upwards?

Will not budge no matter what

How did it happen?

Strangely ours has broken in the last week too, but because I've been unwell I've not been out to look into it.

The wife said it's like the veneer has dropped at the front, and wedging it closed as it fouls on the veneer ahead of the gear lever.

As we don't use it, I can only imagine it was done when we last had the car valetted, but obviously it's too late to go back now.

I saw this on an ML we looked at before buying ours, so seems like it may be fairly common.

Interested in hearing any replies to save me messing about when I do finally getting out to look at it!!

Malcolm - You really should be nominated for a knighthood!!

Thank you.

Malcolm - a BIG thank you for this.

I received two PDF attachments - I'm hoping the long wedge method will do the trick - I don't fancy removing the centre console.

Having read it, it seems the cause is the cigar lighter not being seated correctly. Given that we have no reason to touch it, it seems likely that it may have been done accidentally when valetted.

Thanks once more.

ML ashtray2 is the one I'm missing them Malcolm.

Hopefully ML ashtray will be enough though.

Thanks again.

Malcolm,

Many thanks for the PDF's
Will make an attempt at it this coming week and report back

Pete

Well I was not going to answer with all these SL's coming on the forum, But as I need the post count points I will answer

The ash tray has a flat spring on the rear as in the photo's, You mus look to see if it has come off, thats all that keeps it open.

The center panel has to be removed to get to it, and I bet I know what you are going to ask next :):)

HI, yes in deed you are dead right:) how do you take the center panel out :) .

Move the seat right back and down, prise out the side panels held in by clips, the front section has locating pegs

Take out the 3 screws each side 20mm long if longer 30mm they are the wrong ones ,they are the ones each end and one in the middle inset a touch.

Prise out the panel from the top

Forgot to mention that the ashtray must be taken out first other wise it will not come off, and all of the connectors can be unplugged and the whole thing lifted clear. just upp from the top.

With the gear trim gator just prise it up with a blunt instrument as the picture and turn the plastic collar ½ aturn and the gear knob lifts off

Hi, Thanks For That Will Have A Go Tomorrow
Steve.
