As some of you will know, in addition to the three Mercs I also have a tractor  :fail:

This has a 24 litre tank - the filler cap is right on top, in front of where the windscreen would be if it had one :D ... so filling it from a 20 litre jerrycan full of diesel is a fairly strenuous and potentially messy affair. I'm currently recovering from a hernia repair op. so had to find a better way!

I keep a Ctek charger and various leisure batteries in the same storage shed, so had a quick look on eBay and found a 12V transfer pump for £23.99. Some 25mm ID reinforced hose, a cheap plastic filler nozzle and a few jubilee clips and we were good to go.

The pump comes with a filter for the pickup hose but this is too big for the neck of the jerrycan, so I use it as a cap to stop suicidal bugs crawling into the pipe after use. Plastic bag on the nozzle for the same reason. The hoses and power cable all hang on hooks to keep them off the floor. Diesel is relatively safe but I added a fire extinguisher on the way to the door, just in case

The filler nozzle doesn't automatically cut out when the tank is full (hey, it was only £10.49!) so a bit of care will still be needed when topping up a part full tank, but it controls the flow a lot better than a jerrycan spout does ;) The pump is the lowest powered one I could find (175 W) but still does 45 litres a minute, which is plenty quick enough. It's self priming and happily draws from the jerrycan when the inlet hose is empty to start with.

Gave it a test this afternoon and it quickly put the full 20 litres in with no dramas (or leaks :D).
