Buying a CL500

You need to have owned a CL if you want to buy one. Just to learn what to look for. The ABC system needs oil & filter change regularly (which is not in the Mercedes service instructions). The pulsation damper in the system wears out after 10,000kms+. The front linkage wears out with time (I replaced mine at 15,000 km). The struts can start to leak internally which will eventually sink the car when parked a long time. The bottom plate, the doors and wheel houses needs a careful inspection for possible corrosion. The cable harness in the doors (particularly on the driver side) will brake in time. The car eats rear tyres and they can be pretty expenceive depending on the rim size. The good thing about the 500 is the M113 engine in early models which is bullet proof provided that it has been serviced. I have owned my M/Y 2000 since 2006 and given it tender loving care and been driving it only in summer time.

If you are handy, you can fix a lot of small problems yourself (such as the cable harness), but if you need to take it to a workshop every time something malfunctions, it can ruin you.

It is however one of the most beautiful and comfortable cars ever made.

Isn't that a bit "chicken and egg"?
