... Wonder if a similar list exists for Mercs
Yes, that's how I know my car was made at the Bremen factory. Taking a W202 as an example the VIN brakes down as thus
WDB 202 aaa x y zzzzzz.

202 - Chassis code
aaa - Engine code, 3 digits
x - LHD or RHD code, 1 digit
y - Factory letter code
zzzzzz - unique 6 digit vehicle identifier.

So in the case of my C240, the code starts WDB2020262F and that code is common to all W202 C240's, 026 denotes 2.4L V6, 2 - RHD and F the Bremen factory.

Thanks for that, My 124 was made in Bremen too so :D

Where is "A" because all the W211's on the floor here have that in their chassis number.

Oldies but Goodies

Another reason to buy a w124!:D :D

A= Sindelfingen, Germany
X= Graz, Austria (where some of the W211 production moved to in January 2003)

I actually had one in SA back in '98. Ok if all you wanted was to get from A-B :D
I had one in SA in 1984 - loved it. Fortunately I lived in a place called A and worked at a place called B. Well A = Glenharvie, West Rand and Aggeneys middle of nowhere, Northen Cape.

Groot Trek!!!!!

Not far wrong there!!! It's just a mountain in the middle of the desert! And some bloody drive aswell, what about 12/13 hours? Must be well over a thousand K's????

Yeah, maybe I was being a bit unkind, they were fun to drive, I especially liked the way they tended to go in straight line when you turned the steering wheel a bit too quickly in the wet :) Understeer from hell!!!! At least I only had to go from Lonehill to Rossettenville, (Eloff Str.)......lol. I tell you, oversteer was the least of my worries, if you catch my drift? ;)

Chhers, Bill.

I know the last post on this thread was some time ago but does the above info mean that as the character before the last six on my vin is an 'a' that my c180 was built in die farterland?

My 2006 W203 was made in South Africa (it says so on the VIN plate), and as said above I always assumed that it was simply down to the fact that the RHD cars were made in SA (presumably for the local market, as well as UK, Australia/NZ, Japan, etc).

I had no built quality issues with the car. I think it does matter where the car was built, see the US MLs, as some factories are better than others, but having said that there is no reason to assume that the SA plant is indeed a 'bad' one - and my (admittedly rather limited) experience suggest that it is just as good as the German factory.

Incidentally, Wikipedia mentions that the C-Class was made in the following factories:

Bremen, Germany

Sindelfingen, Germany

East London, South Africa

6th of October City, Egypt

Juiz de Fora, Brazil

Thonburi, Thailand

Bogor, Indonesia

So my W203 estate was built in Bremen as it has an 'F' in the Vin code:thumb::thumb:

most cars are built in brazil...
