C coupe - AMG Black series.....NOT

When I debadged my 560SEC every single person that knew what an SEC was instantly presumed it was a 380!

Personally, I think AMG are cheapening their own brand by adding the tacky black series moniker to their badges......... its all a bit too chavvy in my opinion (If I had a black series id debadge it instantly)

That's why you see these threads on small modified hatch forums that their 1.6 etc have just beat a 'AMG' in blah blah scenario.

A long while ago , when looking for some specs , i came across a ( i think ) US based modified volvo forum. One of the members was telling a story how he came up against an E55 in his chipped up volvo and thought he'd have a go.

Anyway , he was soundly toasted , and left possibly the best comment i have ever read on the forum . Completely deadpan.

yah anything relatively new with AMG on it is better avoided

:D

AFAIK Ghia was only ever a trim level designation for Ford - no performance implications.

I think 'Titanium' replaced Ghia as Ford's top trim level.

IIRC the stereotype always used to be that germans would debadge top spec Mercs & BMWs because they didn't want to be seen as showing off whereas Brits would debadge basic models because they did.

Maybe I am too old for this thread; Who cares and why bother rising to it.

'M-Power' decals, anyone? ;)

No part of that c230 coupe is "AMG spec" nor has seen any AMG attention. It basically has some decorative and shiny bits that ape the look of the AMG models.

Agreed.. and IMO, the "AMG" bodykit on my coupe hardly even bothers to ape the bodykit on the C63. Just looks a bit sportier than a vanilla C-Class.

But it does lead to some amusing conversations in car parks, as mine is debadged (I know, I know) but the dealer-supplied number plate has AMG plastered all over it.

"ooh... AMG! what's it like?"
"amazing. it does 52mpg on a good run..." LOL

You must be kidding....

Obviously you aren't familiar with what a true Black Series AMG variant is !!!!

The "tacky moniker" that you refer to is the result of much engine, chassis and aero work that far exceeds the production line AMG.
The "moniker" is far less visible then the appearance and stance of the vehicle. Add in the sound of the engine and it's apparent that with or without the badge it's something low production and very special.
The "Black Series" is as different from the production AMG as the production AMG is from the standard Merc.

In essence a factory race car that is capable of being street driven...

Drive one and you'll respect the "tacky moniker" !!!

As far as the subject of badging a vehicle differently from what it actually is.....who cares what another does and their reasons behind their actions !!!

I think he meant the add-on for the AMG badge was tacky not the actual engineering or car. I am seeing more and more black series badges appearing on all sorts of mercs now. Not sure it if it really says anything about anybody apart from the owner of the car it is attached to. As mentioned earlier I think you may feel uncomfortable if a sat next to the real thing. Usual giveaway being the peas shooter exhaust(s)

...you get shown up badly!

Did the driver actually try though?

I would have thought the most gentle of starts was the best bet in that situation - or did that person think you were doing the same?

The AMG issue higlighted here is rife in the world of BMW too.

Albeit the other way around, I owned a genuine 1997 E36 M3 Evolution and was asked if it was genuine.

I happily pointed out to him the difference between mine and a 318is with M badges - the like of which I often saw...

M badges are stuck to a lot to indicate M Sport. Only the genuine M cars should have M<number> on them though...

You have completely miss interpreted my point!

The appearance and stance of the vehicle. And the sound of the engine should be plenty enough without having to add the tacky bit to the badge on the back.

Just my opinion of course, but a black series doesnt need a badge (and that is what I was talking about...the badge on the boot, not the engineering....just a bit too "Halfords" for my liking)

If I had one, id order it with no badge

Yes, it took place on a motorway (him either tailing me or pulling up along side for a few miles whilst I stayed in the slow/middle lane and thereafter on to a dual carriageway where he decided to put on his display of performance). It wasn't a traffic light grand prix.
