Don't know if anyone else got an invite to any of these that were going on recently, but thought I'd write up last Sunday afternoon at Dunsfold. Apparently a new thing for MB, and they were keen to get feedback on the event rather than the car...

Not the best of locations - in the middle of an airfield - but a s****y reception trailer with lunch. Not many Benz's lined up - couple of 203's and 211's, but a flurry of 3-series, X/S types and even Focus's (should that be Focii?).

First round the track - reverse direction round most of the Top Gear track with an instructor in C220 Sport CDi. Good fun, plenty of time on the track and the encouragement and tips (such as "keep your foot in, they're not your tyres") got me within 2 secs of his time  . Cracking car, really enjoyed it, and the type of track meant that anything larger power-wise would not have have resulted in the track time dropping to any great degree (only one major straight).

Meet up with Mrs E and kids (no viewing area the the track) and onto Dynamics (C220 Elegance) - demo of ABS and PreSafe during an emergency stop from 65+ and when weaving around barrels. Again, very impressive stuff, but a little dull as I have done similar on AD courses before. Kids thought it was cool - squealing tyres, lots of smoke, seats and windows moving, etc, etc.

Back to a static display of some of the bells and whistles - mainly COMAND, Bluetooth and Linguatronic (or whatever it's called now). Seems to work very well - we could all sit in and ask for place names, postcodes, dial numbers, etc. Shame that the full address book integration is only available with the optional Phone stuff, but the standard seems OK for general use.

Then a road drive with an advanced instructor (C200 SE). Mrs E enjoyed it very much, and not too bad with me and two kids (6+12) in the back. We stopped to change over briefly at a carpark on the far side of the airfield - the kids jumped out for a look-see as this was where the TG project cars were kept (limos, Robin "Shuttle", etc). Some were under tarps, but most were just standing out in the open.

All in all a good afternoon. The 204 seems OK and creeps onto the bottom of the list I'm considering for a replacement to the E next year. I'd be more interested in the estate (due Jan, so they said) as it'll be more practical for Mrs E too. I'd have to try it for a couple of days to see how I got on with the reduced space and firmer ride of the Sport (which is what I'd go for).

Great stuff - glad to hear they're doing it.

I went to a similar event at MIRA (Leicestershire) last year, and had GL, ML, and R-class to play with on-track and off-road. My chariot of choice was the GL420 CDi. Nice.

PS Bacon sandwiches early doors were tasty too. ;)

Shouldnt that be spelt with a "u"? ;)

I'm going to the event at MIRA this Sunday so will let you know how I get on.

I got my invite by going onto the MB web site and there was a section asking if you wanted to drive the new C Class. So I filled in my contact details and got a call back the same day.

Did mine at MIRA this morning and very impressed with the whole event. Lucky enough to have a c320 CDI Sport on the track and the sweet roar of the engine just wanted me to keep flooring it except for a bend coming up! Had one lap on auto and then 2 on ' manual ', using the steering wheel paddles. Paddles took a bit of getting used to at first and by the end of the 2nd lap just getting the hang of it. Instructor then showed how it should be done - nearly flat out and braking into a bend the seat belts tighten up, then the rear twitches and ( I wanted to have another go !) all in all good fun.

No sales pitch whatsoever. The aero dynamics chap was quite proud of the wide channels at the sides of the rear window. Just above the window is a raised lip/wedge that channels rainwater down into the side channels and hence the rear window is kept clear of rain. Whether or not this works in reality or how effective it is remains to be seen. He was also proud about the aerodynamic vents in the rear light clusters!!!!!!!!!!

Pro safe demonstration also quite good. Takes Esp off and then onto a wet skid pan with the car going here, there and everywhere. Does similar with Esp on and very impressive how the car remains relatively stable doing an emergency stop at 65mph. The system also detects wet weather and slightly closes the brake pads/pistons thereby reducing brake travel. If the foot is taken sharply off accelerator, system recognizes something may be amiss and immediately upon braking pro safe kicks in, with flashing brake lights and hazard flashers. As soon as normal driving resumed everything reverts back to normal automatically. Can't remember off hand all the techie ins and outs of pro safe but very impressive.

External appearance of the C series looks ok but dissappointed with the dash. The type of plastic ' crinkly ' finish and the design of the 'curve' on the front passenger side unfortunately remains me of the early Vauxhall Cavaliers. Don't think the new interior Elegance trim finish is a touch on mine but would get used it though.

If anyone has the opportunity to attend one of these events then certainly go. Very well organised and moving all the time with friendly amiable staff. Think they did a good job.

We went to the last session of the day on Sunday @ MIRA.

Set up was good nice hospitality caravan for registration and refreshments.

Most impressive was the number of cars available which meant that there was never more than 3 in a car including the instructor.

Started with the road drive section in a 280 Elegance. Very smooth ride, extremely light steering and very sensitive brakes left me feeling totally unconnected to the car. Have to say a little dissapointed at this stage.

Next onto the track. Again plumped for the 280 but in sport trim. Much better. Seating position was lower and the steering was better weighted. No timed laps unfortunatly as there was a section that we had to slow to 20mpg past the hospitality unit.

Dynamics display was impressive showing the features of pro safe along with ESP. Nice to know what ESP can do if you ever need it!!

New comand looks good although still without full post code entry. The input system similar to BMW i drive works well and the linguatronic was impressive even allowing for regional pronounciation of towns.

Very enjoyable afternoon.

Would I buy a C Class on the strengh of it? Probally not. For me the interior lacks a sense of luxury that you would expect from a MB and the rear accomadation is smaller than on my CLK. So if I was to be in the market for a 4 door saloon then it would have to be either an E or S

See i'd love to attend these type of "meetings" where u can race around in an open field... and generally do stuff that u'd hesitate to do on normal roads.

dont know where they are though! :(

Though these are controlled ' tame ' events they are nevertheless enjoyable but not at all like proper track day events. Not sure, but think this was the first time MB held such event(s). Keep an eye on the MB site when they launch another new model. New C220 Estate being launched in January but doubt if they'll do something similar for estate(s). May be wrong though.
