C180 Auto Transmission question

Hi
I have this 1997 c180, and the ECU has locked the gearbox in limp mode. The codes refer to gearbox rpm sensors. There are 2 codes, referring to 2 sensors. It makes me think that its not sensor failure, maybe something else like an electrical problem or a loose connector - maybe even loose sensors in the gearbox (If theyre on the same bracket). If it was a sensor failure, I wouldnt expect both sensors reported at the same time - although I am not sure how they are used by the ecu. Has anyone got/had any experience with this?

I have access to a vehicle lift, and can easily remove the gearbox sump cover, but I dont want to waste an ATF change unless I know that there is something I can do to repair the problem. I was quoted about £150 for the "electonic kit" as it was called by a dealer, and £40 to clear the trouble codes. I also dont want to have the codes cleared only for them to reappear in a days time. Can anyone shed some light on what this "kit" contains and if its worth buying before I open the gearbox?

Regards
John

The electronic plate contains all the electrical items within the gearbox and can crack causing issues, but before going too deep check the connector on the outside of the box.

Hi Guys

Thanks for replying. The codes were:

013 speed sensor N3Y3-611
109 speed sensor N3Y3-611
114 selector cover implausible (selector lever position)
126 altitude correction from ecm implausible - CAN (altitude influence factor)

I checked the connector on the outside of the box, and it seems ok. Its dry and clean inside, and it was locked in place correctly.

Howard - that adventure with your car sounds similar to the problems I am having. Only problem is that I cant easily reset the DTC's, so experimenting to recreate the conditions is difficult. I have posted a question about connecting to the diagnostic connector with a scantool. If I can reset the codes myself, it would be a whole lot easier and cheaper.

I just compared these to the DTC listings and discovered that:
The only current code is 013.

109 is a previous occurrence of 013.
114 is a previous occurrence of 018.
126 is a previous occurrence of 030.

Both 018 and 030 are auto resetting codes. 013 is not.

What does B or D mean in the Limp mode column?

A couple of times , mine reset with a key off reset .

Another time , i had the codes reset by a member with a portable computer and that fixed it.

But then it just went. Yours sounds like the electronic plate in the gearbox ( speed sensor ) , but the implausible gear selection sounds iffy.

Hello,

Its flippin' sunday for gods sake. MB 24/7 for me.....

Anyway, you need to change your electrical plate and do an ATF chnge and all should be well.

Those faults point directly to a electrical plate problem. It will be benificial to replace the pilot bushing too.

I am having a relaxing day watching the GP and the Burly horse thingy. On my 3rd Stella and 2nd Cafe Creme. Roast beef for later....mmmm

Very OT but I don't care.

Judging by how wet it is round here at present the water jumps should be full..:)
Seen this morning, and it's raining again now..soon be proper floods...

Thanks Olly

The problem with the speed sensor is imtermittent I think. When my Father in law reset the code before, it worked for almost 2 months before it went again. Is this common?
