Hi Guys.

I am new to the site, and already have a little problem.
I have a 2005 merc c 180 kompressor. No problems till this morning. Car is sluggish on idle. 800 rpm. also when put into gear either R or D, the revs drop to 400 and it seems as though it wants to stall. ( and has stalled a couple of times ). No obvious misfire when driving but when revs low or car stops very 'chuggy' I have checked spark plugs, these in in good condition. No cades showing on reader. Any ideas please ?

I have been driving this and now the engine light has come on. Code is P0010. something to do with the Cam position actuator circuit. Any advice please..

Sounds like the timen chain has streched mate

Seems strange though as this came on suddenly.

I have removed the 2 cam position actuators located at the front and both of these have oil in them. though not in the wire harness. Is this normal ?

Yes there will be oil inside both of them,i think you need to remove the rocker cover and check the timen marks, this is a comon problem with these engines

+ 1 for the chain stretching , very common on this enine . Get it checked before any harm can be done

Timing chain issues are well known on 271 engines. There is plenty to read on this forum alone.

would this suddenly cause a rough idle if it was a timing chain issue ? I would have thought it may be a progressive worsening, but this was fine 1 day and really bad the next. Also how much would i be looking at to replace the timing chain ?

Well it turns out that it is the timing chain, tis slipped and kaput Oh and the inlet cam gear is shaggggged as well.. Cost to repair.....£1300..

I think this may well be my last mercedes... £ 5oo for the Cam gear alone..

Thanks for the advice guys..

Wish it was 2013 already.

That sounds about right , have the exhaust gear checked as well , mine had stripped the teeth on the inlet gear and 4 teeth on the exhaust gear .
I had to change both .The m271 engine is crap IMHO , right after I changed both gears and chain I had to do the head gasket . Then the balance shaft sized and that had to be changed . All this happed within the last 6 months .

Hi Folks, Shorty, what's the head gasket change like? Anything special to watch out for?
Ta, Clive
