Can anyone advise me how to cure the noise I here intermitently. I Have
a C180 sport 1998 with full service history, recent service and 58K miles.

Now and again when either the car drops a gear automatically or I kick down there is a loud clunk heard that sounds like it's from the front under
the kick down area. It can be heard from the outside. I was told it could be a loose cover etc but all independants have failed to find a cure. Ball
joints are new. Noise def' coming from front central area now and again.

Any help appreciated..
regards
Richard

engine /gearbox mounting

Agree with Ian possibly engine mounting on way out or maybe gearbox rear mount. It can soften if contaminated with oil. Other possibility is propshaft front flexible coupling but thats well back from where you think you hear the noise. You may have to remove the catalytic converter heat shield to see it clearly I think, so not obvious from a cursory inspection underneath.

Picture of Mounts. Might be helpful. :)
