C180 estate
Please could anyone help a newbie MB owner?

I've just bought a 1996 manual c180 estate and it's started making a strange noise. At first I thought it was behind the dash, a whirring/buzzing noise which starts when you turn the ignition on. On further investigation it is louder under the bonnet and appears to be coming from the throttle body, I'm afraid the best way I can describe it is whirring/buzzing or almost like a fan motor running. Any ideas anyone??

Any help would be greatly appreciated, please!!

i wouldn't worry too much until it breaks down, they all do that sir! this is assuming that the noise is only loud enough to be heard when the engine is not running? if it is heard when running it could be on its way out, but i doubt it is.

Hi Alexander,

Thanks for the reply!

The reason for me asking is actually because I'm a bit of a thick female and do a lot of driving on my own, I don't want it to conk out!

If there isn't a known fixable problem then I think I may consider replacing the throttle body for peace of mind :)

You are correct that you can't hear it with the engine running, at first I just thought it was the heater fan running when I was sat in the car but nothing so simple!

Cheers again! :thumb:

jakspeed, please do not feel you are thick, many people would not know their throttle body if it jumped on their shoulder and shouted "I AM A THROTTLE BODY, ALL BOW TO MY ACCURATE ANGLE CONTROL" in to their ear.

the noise you describe IS normal, and although it is hard to be sure without actually hearing how loud it is, i am sure it is fine and dandy. also, to amend my earlier rather presumptious post, they all do that madam. btw if you wish to replace it you will find the cost rather prohibitive i fear.

As above. Very normal noise.

Hi again,

Thanks for the post, Alexander - made me laugh!

And thanks to all for the info, I didn't think it should be making a noise but if it's normal I'll just shut my ears to it & turn the radio up!
