Hi,

Just got some bad news. The wife's CLK wouldn't start. Got it to a garage. Was hoping it would be a fuel pump issue but turns out that a slipped timing chain. Told that they could replace the sprockets and chain for €1,600 with no guarantee that there was not further damage to the engine. He believes it is highly likely and the €1,600 would be flushed down the drain. He floated another option, he knows another mechanic, not the same garage, with a spare 200K engine with only 40K on it. That would be €2,700 fitted tested and working.

My question is, has anyone had similar engine replacement work done? Is it worth it? What are the risks?

The wife really likes the car, it is well spec'd apart from having a now dodgy engine.

Or, should I just sell it for braking and look for another car?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

T

Its a common problem. It is likely there will be more damage. Is the history known on the new engine? Frequent servicing with the correct oil etc may prevent this problem but there is always the risk that the "new" engine will develop the same issue. Is it worth spending the money on?

As above, engine swap is the sensible option, but €2,700 is too high for a car at that age (and given that the new engine might not last very long either).

I would try to find a cheaper option for engine swap, or failing that I would swap the engine then sell the car to a trader - assuming this will leave you better off finacially than selling it as spares or repair on eBay.
