Hi, I’m buying a 2016 C220 Estate on Wednesday, we were looking at getting a C250 but opted to keep the £30 per year road tax.
I was wondering if the two had the same engine but we’re just mapped differently from factory giving the extra horsepower.

Weve looked into mapping the C220 and it looks like the average power is 220bhp after a remap which I’m happy with, I was just wondering for my own curiosity.

Thanks in advance

I believe that the 220 is a single Turbocharger and the 250 is a dual Turbocharger set up. There may be differences in injectors as well.

This was certainly the case with the previous C and E Class range.

What is the Road Fund Licence figure for the 250 engine?

I have a February 2916 295 Estate. It is labelled C250d. My RFL receipt from February 2922 was £130 for 12 months. Fuel consumption for mixed driving for journeys of about 30 miles is about 45mpg. Long runs on motorway 70-75mph 300miles with just at break at services 54 MPG using brim to brim calculations. 2 miles to the shops and back 22 mpg according to car computer. Miles drop a little in winter, Shell / Esso top grade at 14p a litre premium over standard fuel cleans the engine but gives no better MPG. Adblu consumption goes down 50% with the premium fuel over supermarket standard stuff.

The CDI's tend to be 2143cc and the d 1950cc , however the latter has a big problem .

Think it was £135 or £165 for the C250

I believe that as the 250d engine is on the top end of its emissions group cars like my 250d estate with 19” wheels and full Premium Plus package fall into a higher RFL bracket than a saloon model with smaller narrower wheels and without the extras adding to the mass to be moved.

I’m not familiar, are the engines troublesome?
Early ones had problems with piezo fuel injectors, but that was sorted well before the 205 came out by reverting to solenoid injectors during production. Not had issues with ours thus far.

Common issues/niggles with these cars: Auxiliary Battery, NOx sensors, Door handle LEDs.

Really? The ones I’ve seen were £135 or £165, did regulations change or emissions I wonder?
I think it came down to the extras of the car. As mentioned by Farmer boy the 19” wheels took the car into a higher tax bracket, mine has the standard 18” amg but it is premium plus so it has all the extras.

Cripes. My 2016 320i touring gives a steady 40mpg +/- 2mpg regardless of town or motorway.

And my 4.7 / 5.5 / 5 litre MBV8's didn't vary much either.

I knew diesel needed longer /steadier runs but I didn't realise that the difference was so great.

Every day's a schoolday.

Between around 2015 and 2018, the W/S205s were marked 'd' on the bootlid and had the 671 diesel unit. After early 2018, it changed to the 674 which as others have said can be a load of trouble after about 75k miles.
