hi
i have just bought a c220cdi coupe diesel auto merc,
whilst i am very happy with it i have noticed 2 or 3 times now over the last 2 weeks while driving the engine just starts revving as though the gearbox has gone into neutral !!!
if you slow down it seems to sort itself out and goes into gear and all is fine again.
a bit worrying
any ideas guys ??????
if i get it on a star diagnostic machine would they be able to tell me what it is ???
thanks, andy.

Have the transmission fluid level checked. Don't be tempted to put in some more fluid 'just to be sure'. Too much is as bad as too little, and you must use the correct specification fluid if you want your gearbox to last more than a few miles.

You won't find a fluid dipstick on your car, there isn't one. The level check must be done in a very specific manner. Take it to a good MB independent specialist to have it done. If by some miracle it isn't low fluid level, he can put it on a STAR there and then.

As Stratman, almost certainly low ATF level, but why?

Have a look under the car for drips, and look down past the engine for ATF puddles on the undershield. Steel ATF cooling pipes can corrode and leak.

A common source of leaks from the gearbox is from the large electric plug located on the o/s front of the gearbox.........its a very easy and cheap diy repair, a new socket (MB call it a 'spacer') with 0 rings costs around £20 and takes about 1/2 hour to fit (or less)
