Our Mercedes C220 CDI estate has had a major problem today. I went to start the car up in the morning, and put the key in the ignition (it's one of those laser keys), turned it into position 1, lights come on, position 2, all dash lights come on. Good.

Came to position 3, the car wouldn't start? Tried again, nope nothing zilch.

Thought battery might be flat, got jump leads with a mates car, nothing.

So my initial thoughts are could either be spark plugs or imoboliser, but the spark plugs arn't even a year old yet.

Any ideas appreciated

Well it won't be spark plugs on a CDi...

What exactly happened, did it turn over at all.?

Could be a duff injector.

Hi Vita, you do not have sparking plugs so forget that.

Was the engine turning over

Ah ok. The engien doesn't turn over at all. I put it into position 3, and I hear a few clicking noise that's it.

It was fine yesterday, I parked it in the garage and it was fine.

The clicking noises will be the starter solenoid, it could be the starter motor thats failed, a meter over the terminals would tell all

I don't know where the starter motor is, any help in locating it? I'm suprised that it would die, as the car has been running fine.

have a look in the right front fuse box for any blown fuses.

Starter can be acessed from underneath the car. The undertrays will have to be removed to see. It is on the left side of the engine.

Yeah, the sound comes from around there. I'll have to check that then.

Check battery.

Check correct connection of terminals on battery.

Had this problem last weekend, and needed new battery !

Hope its not your starter !

If you have a FMBSH call Mobilolife, they will attempt a repair free of charge, carry out free diagnostics so you know EXACTLY what is wrong and if they cannot repair it they will recover it to a dealer and get you a hire car within 2 hours.

That is of course if you want the dealer to repair it:rolleyes:

Good point, forgot this, and easy check turn the head lamps on, turn the key to start,if the lamps go dim its the battery flat

Rather than flat it's probably gone dead cell hence the no start from a jump.

I can't see it being a fuse as the starter attempts to operate. Also is there a fuse on the starter circuit.?
