Not sure if I’m understanding correctly, my friend has an 2013 C220 and I have a 2013 E220. From my understanding these both have the same 0m651 engine but the c220 sits in the C tax bracket and mine sits in the D bracket. His tax is £35 per year and mine is £150, difference of £115 per year.

How is this possible?

The tax bracket is determined by CO2 emissions. A heavier car with wider tyres will have higher CO2 emissions. This is most likely the main reason for the discrepancy in VED between the two cars.

Another point to consider is that the OM651 engine has several variants with different tune levels, and so the OM651 engine in a W204 will not necessarily be identical in all respects to the same engine in a W212.

His co2 emissions are 116 g/km and mine is around 130g/km. so an extra 14g/km and the price increases by £115 😤

Sadly yes.

This is from the government's website:

So to go from 110g/km to 120g/km is £15 difference but to go from 121g/km to 130g/km is £115. Absolute madness

“Saving the planet” one gram at a time.

Talking of which, if yours was just one gram more, the bill would be…..

Note also, that if he drives 50,000 miles a year and you drive 5,000, his bill is still cheaper than you.

We thank you for your tax payments

Consider yourself lucky: if you go from 225g/km to 226g/km, this 1g difference will set you back a whopping £280...... :D
