With winter soon upon us, some of us unlucky fools have only the one car. Mine is a c220 rear wheel drive - dream come true in winter conditions. I was like, it's Bradford, it hard ever snows here. Famous last words indeed!

Anyways, any advice on snow socks please and are they worth it? Seem like common sense to me????

I have a set of snow socks in my car, bought last year.

I’ve seen them put to good use in deep snow. Paramedic on-call was completely stuck, helped push him out of the snow and proceeded to get stuck again. Put snow socks on the driver wheels and then gave me a lift. Worked extremely well for getting out of a that kind of situation.

I keep a pair in the boot. They're certainly not a replacement for chains but they'll get you from untreated side roads to cleared main roads. There's no chance they'll last journey of any length, if that's what you're after.

Probably good use as an emergency kit for getting out of deep snow but not for driving.

No you wouldn’t expect to drive around with them on. ‘Proper snow’ only for these.

I live in an area at the top of a hill so whatever direction I take if the snow is bad is tricky. Ironically I’m not far from what are usually busy, clear roads but that last couple of miles is the tricky bit. Hence they’re ideal to keep just in case.

In my early days of motoring an old guy said cut up a dozen lengths of Hemp rope and stick them in the boot, if stuck simply thread them through the wheels at equal spacing and tie off, he promised they would get you out of most snow stuck situations and cost nothing. I travelled many winters with them in the boot but never needed to try it out!

Typical that! Although better to be prepared than not in these situations.

Similar idea to these things on eBay

Again really only emergency use and I’m not sure I’d want to wrap them round my alloys. Probably good for a set of scrappy winter wheels though.

Can you imagine if there wasn't, what a mess that would be haha.

Quite like these and supposed to suitable for my car. Yes, may need to be careful of alloys, but as mine are not super immaculate !! This is a get home answer for me on side of hill and a little out in the sticks.

Mine is an e320 estate/auto....never had a problem in ice or snow, even in deepest, darkest rural Nth Yorkshire....but then I'm an old fart and learned to drive "properly" in winter......I DO carry snow chains "just in case" though...lol
