C220CDI vs C250CDI W204 long term reliability

My C250 CDI ‘13 with 190k miles had the water pump changed at 180k, one DPF sensor at 170k and the chain tensioner at 190k. I’m very pleased with this car and still drives like new.

OP, you are looking to buy a 7 to 8 year old Mercedes Benz , and by your own admission would not have money to fix any timing chain issues etc.

Go ahead and buy whatever you decide after taking advice from those on here who (from experience) can help you make that choice. But make sure you have a little pot of money squirreled away for 'unforeseen costs' .

Thanks. I would have money to fix it but trying to save so it trying to avoid it!

Ive now been looking at C350 CDI as it’s 8495 with 58000 miles so this could potentially allow 2k for repairs should they arise.

But, doing research on this engine, it appears to have issues too and the MPG is significantly worse. I think I’m going to struggle to find a new car at this rate!

How much does your rear parcel shelf vibrate at 30mph and them rpms at that speed in that gear. Bet its like an earthquake lol

My E350 will do 30 mph in 6th at 900/1000 rpm. 60 mph in 9th at 900/1,000 rpm. And 85 mph in 9th at just about 1500rpm and it's not remapped. Love it!

If you want a reliable Diesel with loads of power and torque save yourself a few £s and get a e320 cdi with a I6 engine.

If your worried about potential costs and things going wrong then maybe a Mercedes isn’t the car for you. They are a premium car and if things fail you will pay premium prices. If this creates anxiety I’d maybe look elsewhere..

I love my MB but other than in name and image I don't really think run of the mill MB's have been a premium car for some time. If they cost twice as much as the competition and in exchange were as reliable as a W124 or W201 then they would still be premium cars.

True but the equivalent Ford Mondeo or Vauxhall Insignia will be cheaper to service, cheaper to repair, cheaper to insure

Exactly. And with a true premium brand we wouldn't be discussing the possibility of expensive mechanical failures. I'm not having a poke at MB here, does anyone think that Audi or BMW are any more reliable than a Ford Mondeo. Truth is they are probably worse.

My E Class costs me £175 Fully Comp this year, I have it serviced through a reputable Indy at very reasonable prices, less than a colleague pays for his Citroen C5, parts prices are not as expensive as people think.
Even my main dealer service prices were very reasonable when it was in warranty, again cheaper than his C5.

My neighbour has an Insignia and his has seen the garage more times than my E class, and again costs more to service.

So my conclusion is that based on 305k miles of almost total reliability and routine servicing, my Merc has been bloomin cheap to keep on the road compared to some of the so called cheaper marques, and a damn site more reliable.

Engines are identical, even water pumps.
Difference is down to mapping and injectors. 250 has larger capacity injectors.
Both have identical turbos, they're both two stage, so if you like two turbos in one.
My E250 has been remapped to 254bhp and 600nm of torque.
Believe me when I say it pulls like a train but still gives 55mpg on a long run.
I have got e250(2009) and it’s really faster and powerful than my friend ‘s e220

Most happy with my bulletproof w204 c220 cdi, cheap to run with M-B indie regular servicing, BUT, would prefer improved torque/power of a c250.

Considered but don't feel comfortable with a remap, as concerned it could strain engine and mechanical components.

At 10 years old things have worn out on my c220 just the same as any other car.

Consumables and things like shocks, bushes, racks, aren't that much pricier than a ford, but the mb specific parts are eye wateringly expensive.

Any car as it gets older will cost.

I had a 2008 V6 E320 CDI for a while. Chatting to Terry Gates while it was in for inspection just after I bought it, he said: "I don't like these much; they don't give much trouble. I like the four-pots, though..."

Are you not overthinking this?

Virtually any car by any manufacturer will have some known faults, a few seconds on Google will show you that..

You speak about your research showing "some issues", they probably do have these as nothing is perfect and every car will have been treated differently by the owners and may have been serviced to different standards. The important point is how often do these "known faults" appear on well looked after well serviced cars?

The V6 models can suffer from oil cooler leaks, inlet port shut off motors can fail, glow plug controllers can fail etc etc etc.

Our 2008 E320 CDi V6 is now at 136,000 miles and nothing major has needed replacing, just routine wear and tear items such as a few suspension components. But it came with a comprehensive service history of MB Main dealer for the first 6 years and then MB independent specialist plus the previous owner was having oil changes at 6 month intervals.
