hi
my 2000 c320 has suddenly started to judder when idle... and stutter a little (very rarely) when i take off. When drivnig, the car is very smooth but the shaking starts when idling.. what could cause this? i have been told the plugs may need changing? but it is due a service soon.
Also, is there an independant dealer near cheshire? (warrington) to carry out a service a?
cheers

My 99 SL320 has just started doing the same but I haven't a clue as to what it may be. I'm guessing its something electrical but would be suprised if its the plugs as I'm sure this would show at speeds other than Idle. MAF sensor?

is that the oxygen sensor? if so, is this expsensive?

The MAF sensor is situated just after the airbox - it seems failure is quite common around 50k miles and also results in some odd auto changes, which my car is displaying. Other symptoms include a rough idle, poor economy and reduced power. Cost of the unit is around £200 (Euro Car Parts) but it might not be the MAF - I'm having my car checked next week.

this sounds like the problem... would it affect the gear change? ie make ita bit sluggish? just want to be clued up when i get round to taking it to a garage. But.. i had to replace one of the air intakes the other day,, damn thing came off!!

I think one of the major symptoms relates to rough auto gearchanges - abrupt changes, hanging on to a gear, etc. You can find quite a bit of info on here if you search under MAF and it seems like a very common problem, so let's hope it stops the shakes at idle.

The 190 has an "Air flow meter", on the throtle body. Is that basicaly the same as a MAF? And can it cause the same probs as the MAF when faulty?? Ifso, it would explain a lot of probs i seem to be having at the mo.

Sorry to thread jack BTW.

Thanks,

Stu

Not looked at what you have fitted but an air flow meter is normally a vain type and a MAAF is a hot wire type.

Vain type meters can and do go faulty often due to dirt on the resistor track, so before condemning it give it a clean with IPA alchohol then switch cleaner.

i read somewhere that holding the brake whist in d can aggravate this.. is this true?
also, where coudl i find the maf on a c320? i removed the air filter the other day but could not see anything? want to give it a clean before i take it anywhere just to be on the safe side....

Hi,

Based on my SL, you should find the MAF situated at the very back of the engine (between back of engine and bulkhead) and it can be found under the palstic engine cover. You need to remove the front part of the cover first, then take the 2nd part out and then you'ull see the MAF at the back- it's round and can be replaced in 15 - 20 minutes! Remember to take note of the part no. and manufacturer i.e. Bosch.

I dont think holding the brake will cause any additional problems - if it needs replacing, it needs replacing!
