Hi Guys

I’m new to this group and I have a C350e as a taxi, I’ve had it since October.

A couple of weeks ago I hit a bad pothole and got a rattle at the back of the car. I checked around and found a brake pad tension spring loose so I had them replaced, and thought no more of it. Due to crappy weather I didn’t have any windows open until yesterday morning when I heard that I still had the rattle, I now also have a pulse/pumping sound coming from the back of the car when I’m driving really slow in electric mode or reverse only. So what I’m thinking is that I have a broken cooling system pipe ( the rattle ) and because of it the coolant reservoir has emptied and the pump is trying to get the coolant but because there isn’t any that’s why I can hear the pulse.

Has anyone had any issues like this and does anyone think I’m on the right track.

Thanks Richard

Anything come up on the dash to suggest coolant low? Any engine codes if you stick a reader in it?

I’m not having any codes on the dash at all, I’ve checked the coolant and if it’s the round reservoir front right in the engine bay then it’s half full. I’m thinking it might be a broken cooling system pipe causing the rattle and the pump could be sucking air. It’s in the garage on Friday for the mot so he’s gonna have a look then, even though he’s admitted that he doesn’t know much about the hybrids system

This is usually a pump that is activating. I have fixed a couple with software updates. A Main dealer or a specialist with a genuine Star can do this for you.

Richard interested to know if you got your problem resolved and how your are finding it as a car to run as a taxi. I have a number of Mercs on our fleet and considering a C350e albeit somewhat put off by HV issues that seem to be cropping up on cars that are 6 years plus.

I take the manufacturer warranty on the HV side is only three/five years as per the normal MB warranty?

Hi Folks, I 'm experiencing battery related problem with my Mercedes c350e, 2016 model with about 46k miles. The dashboard was initially showing battery icon with see owner's manual in red text warning. I took the car to Mercedes garage for diagnosis, they advised to change the 12-volts and auxiliary battery, which I did, however did not solve the problem. The warning then changed to "battery icon with stop vehicle shift to to P. Leave engine running" in amber text. Though I left the engine running, the engine turned off and would not start again until RAC breakdown assist came, charge the 12-volts battery then restart the car. Based on RAC technician report and the evidence, it shows that the 12-volts battery is not charging. Has anyone had similar experience? What sort of battery charging technology charges the 12-volts battery in the c350e car? Any suggestion and advice on what to do next?

Welcome.

The C350e has a belt-driven alternator, like most cars, and either the alternator or the belt can fail. Though the issue with the battery charging could also be a failure of an electronic component in the Battery Management System. And, yes, from the symptoms you described, it seems obvious that the battery isn't being charged. How long ago did you have the batteries replaced at the dealer? I am surprised that they didn't spot the charging issue, especially if they had the car connected to STAR.

Thank you kindly, Markjay for your comment. To answer your question, I replaced the 12-volts and auxiliary batteries in October 2024, thereafter in December 2024 the vehicle broke down and would not start until RAC roadside assistance came in to charge and start the vehicle.
Just to explore further your comment that the vehicle has a belt-driven alternator, do you know for sure whether that is the case and is it the same battery charging technology/device that charges both the 12-volts and the high voltage batteries?

I don't know for fact how the HV battery is charged, but the car certainly has a traditional belt driven alternator, see also:

I’ve seen this before and have been racking my brain to remember what it was that I did to fix it. I’m sure in the end it was a fuse somewhere that had blown, but I can’t remember exactly where. I do remember that I tried an alternator first and then went through wiring in the driver’s side of the car before I eventually fixed it. I’m sure it was a fuse in the end. I’ll look back through some invoices to try to find the job
