C36 red and green alarm lights

I have recently put new batteries in the remote, which is in fact a new one via MB dealer (ouch). However I find that the lights STILL flash away when I lock or unlock the car, I have no trouble starting it, and when started they happily flash away for a while as they do when locking, for what seems an age. Is this normal?

Thank you for that. Tested and when I put my arm in though the open window nothing happened but when I opened the door with the internal handle the siren went off. Then it took a couple of times on the remote to stop it. I must add that I am not electronically minded

What kind of remote fob do you have, a flip out like in the picture or a 2 or 3 button remote fob?
Did the hazards flash when the siren sounded?

Where are the Red and Green lights you mention in your first post, in the mirror and door handle?

Replace remote fob batteries if the haven’t been replaced recently.
