Hello Chaps,

I just ran through my MOT and have received an "Advisory" on my rear tyres.

Well I'm going to get them replaced (Fronts Continental Sport Contact 225/45 R17 Z / Rears 245/40 R17 Z) but i always did like the look of Michelin Pilots...:o

1: Should I stay with the Conti's or is a move to michelin an "upgrade"?(maybe just visual?)

2: Where is the best place (read: cheapest!) to get tyres from?

3: Is it advisable to change ALL the tyres or just the 2 that really need it?

Many thanks as always for your help

Are you a member of Costco - I noticed the other day they have some good deals on Michelin

No - I'm a Makro member :-(

Advice awaited people!

1: Conti's are fine.

2: Camskill.co.uk

3: It doesn't really matter as long as you change your tyres in pairs.

Join Costco (Croydon, Watford, Thurrock) You will get your money back on the first Michelin you buy. Cheap to start with. Even cheaper with a 25% off voucher! :bannana:

I always found Goodyear GSD3's good on the E55.
Peter has them on his C43 too.
Found them better than continentals.
Whatever you do, don't get Avon ZZ1's. They are rubbish. Hard wearing, but don't warm up and slide, even on a track day. (Ask GrahamC230K about Bruntingthorpe;) )

michelins and contis are both good for grip and wear, pirrellis are better for grip but worse for wear. Bridgestone i found cr*p.

I'll second that, Goodyear F1 GSD3's are excellent.
Bridgestone Potenzas are poor in the wet.

Thirded, I've bought countless sets of GSD-3s, one of the best performance tyres that money can buy.

If there is a downside, I'd say only an average wear rate, slightly noisy at motorway speeds (probably due in part to the tread pattern), and perhaps bettered by less performance-orientated tyres in adversely cold weather (ie, now).

I'd buy them again tomorrow in a heartbeat :)

Agree with Adam on prices

camskill are very competitive - best prices i could find on-line

i just got 2 for the fronts - Falken 452's 225/45/17 - 140 quid for two delivered in 2 days

good site to navigate also - for Contis/goodyear etc.

Ok thanks all - I already use Camskill for my Mobil 1 and was very happy with price & service - I'll check their tyres out!

I also have goodyear eagle f1's, they are damn good. and i can also agree with everyone else in that bridgestones are quite crap, used them in the past and one of them even popped on the motorway (so glad it was a rear tyre!).

hmmm- i like the look of the Eagles but am now concerned that they are "Summer" tyres and thus no good in this type of weather - anyone running them at the mo in the snow?

-also - If I go the eagle route I'll have the rears on Eagles and front on Conti's - is this a problem?

It wont be a problem at all, as long as they are in pairs as i said before. A few people have told me that having directional tyres (V-tread pattern) on the fronts of a W202 isn't a great idea though.

I'm using my eagle's in the wet, and they have great traction IMHO. (and i dont have traction control or asr or anything!) :)

See, I'd want all the tyres to be the same in the long run. V-treads apparently not being so good at the front kinda rules them out for me then...

I can confirm that the GSD3's are truly dreadful in the snow and slush.

Although I quite like them normally. They also seem to have a tendency to tramline a bit.

Goodyear have now discontinued the GSD3's in both these sizes, although there may still be a few knocking around....replaced with the F1 Assymetric, good reviews on these tyres when introduced but have heard complaints on wear...

I used the F1's all year round. No problems in the wet or on snow.

Well yesterday I managed to only go 20 yds, in 3-4 inches of snow/slush and ice, before the car would go no further. ( I only need to go 100 yds before I hit the main roads)
Backwards/forwards esp on or off, no good. I could not even get the car back on the drive, I had to dig it out.

Perhaps it was a special type of snow:D

Son's VW polo with skinny tyres, had no problem at all. Wifes ML also had no issues as expected.

When I had the E55, it would go up and down my road no problems.
The road is on a slight slope and never gets gritted.
The mrs CLK cab with Pilots on, wouldn't go 6 inches the other day without slipping.
