C43 engine noise

Hi all.
I have recently noticed a noise coming from what sounds like the front of the engine, the best way i can describe it, it sounds like a worn bearing.
Its also intermittent. if i hold the car on the brakes in drive its louder than when i put it neutral.
My local garage said it was the tappets, i dont think so.
I thought it was the water pump which i had recently changed, along with the belt, belt tensioner (seized) and crank shaft pulley.
The engine still feels as smooth as before and there are no funny vibrations.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, its a 98 estate 125k.

Probably the polybelt idler, the one on my E55 disintegrated and ended up with the belt running around the remains of the spindle.

Yes, the very top small pulley

That has been changed as well.
Just went for a short drive and noticed a howling sound, opened the bonnet to check and noticed the fan not spinning.
seems like this has failed as well!!

My idler disintegrated on the M6 throwing the belt off in pieces and wrecked water pump, fan viscous bearing and crankshaft oil seal. Took hours to get recovered.

My indie fixed the lot it in a day, not exactly cheap but could have been a lot worse.

Quick update,
Viscous fan has been change and all seems ok now.
Amazed at how much noise and vibration is transmitted through the car and transmission when this part is faulty.
Thanks for all the input.

Out of interest BlackC55, how much would it cost to rectify the tappet noise?

It very much depends on how many are faulty. It will be a few hundred I suspect.

Have you tried flushing the engine oil?

Is that for all of them?
Its had an oil and filter change less than 2k ago.

Was it flushed? Did they use a flushing fluid?

Only replace the noisey one if the flushing does not work.

No it was not flushed.
Will try that and let you know if it makes a difference.
Thanks.

Hi , i recently had a very scary noise on my C43 engine, front passenger side. Thought it was finished! Turned out to be air con compressor unit had gone, being bolted direct to engine it made noises as if coming from engine.

Replaced it with recon unit!

Hi Olly,
When you talk of flushing the oil system, what kind of special liquid do you use? I probably need to do this with my daily driver (C240T) which has the M112 engine. It does make some tapping sounds at idle only (cold and hot). I call it the Singer sewing machine :D

Gosh I know this thread is getting a bit old, but the stuff is called "flushing oil", it's for flushing the oil system.:D

The stuff I used was a thin white oil, you drain and then half-fill the engine with this stuff, run the motor for some while as directed, then drain and discard with oil filter. New filter and refill with Mobil 1 0W-40.

Only problem with flushing oil is it can be a bit too ambitious with its cleaning job and find leaks for you.
