C43 or CLK430

See you at Santa Pod then! We'll see what goes first - your gearbox or my clutch..

I suspect I would lose that bet.. the clutch is getting somewhat digital on mine after 60,000 miles and I think it would probably only be good for a couple of full-bore starts maximum.. :o

Cheers,

Gaz

Evo timed it at 5.8.. Autocar separately timed it at 5.8...

First race my C43 gets at SP is against my Golf - for pink slips :D

I've never owned either car but i've driven the C43 quite a few times and it is a special car.

No offence intended to any owner, but i seriously think the C43 is a bit of a marketing ploy. Yes its said have more bhp, be quicker, and have better equipment (which i'm not doubting) but i really dont think even with all that in mind, its THAT different from the clk430, so dont count it out.

In terms of quality, they both should be identical, as Will was saying earlier, they shared the same compnents, and they even share the same chassis. Maybe the C43 will have a better spec (seats etc) and better equipment (shocks, alloys brakes etc)because its an AMG but you have to budget for replacing them as they cost a bomb, whereas the Clk430 may not cost as much (correct me if i'm wrong here).

The CLK is a good-looking old-school coupe, the 202 is a good-looking old-school saloon. Your not losing either way, so its your choice.

Note: I used to fuss over book times to 60, but when your rolling around in a 4.3 V8 with 300-odd bhp, who gives a toss how long it takes you to get 60? In my car, i pull off the line at my own pace... and if someone next to me wants to give it a go while i'm already rolling goodluck to them... ;)

Thanks for all the feedback, it's very intresting.
I have been swayed towards the CLK and have taken it up a notch to the CLK55 AMG, now this has got to be the best of both worlds :) or are there anything to watch out for on these I should know about.

After starting the second page of this thread I was thinking to myself why dont you try the CLK55. You wont be disappointed after driving one.

Main thing to watch for on these is rust. The W208 and W210 have a bad reputation for rust due to quality issues when MB merged with Chrysler.
Other points to note is the MAF sensor and the Cats which can be very expensive to replace. There are some very very good CLK55 examples around. You just have to find them. One member picked up a black one recently that looked like it came out of the factory this year.

Good luck searching

I'm quite liking a CLK55 for my next one, need to keep an eye out as I'm in no hurry really.

Want to see one in black - got a link?

After shopping around and having quite a few test drives, the Avantgarde 430 CLK was a no brainer for me. Hard to pin all the points down, but all i can say is it 'felt right'. Carried on looking for quite a while, and since October 09 have been the proud owner of a real low mileage 430. Starting it up still makes me smile, the interior is very easy on the eye (that rear ashtray thing is a shambles to be fair!) and the whole feel of the car is one of comfort and solidity. Mileage is just under 33 on a run too, better than the wife's Volvo!!

You must drive like you are driving Miss Daisy ! :D

Never managed to get more than 31 out of mine , and that is driving like a vicar with a victoria sponge on the dashboard.

I have found my CLK 430 Avantgarde to be very quick off the mark for a big coupe. NO rust at all and it is a 99 car and covered 77k. The interior quality is very good ( I had 2 Lexus cars before the CLK So comfort was a factor when I went for the CLK) Lots of comfort and toys for a sports coupe and a good looking shape.
Cannot comment on the C43 as I haven't driven one but I would totally disagree with the bad build quality issue for the CLK. As other members have said the "bad CLK" I can only imagine was one built by drunken Germans on a Monday morning after a good weekend binge!
Just my opinion.
