Can 7 speed gearbox be serviced ?

As others have said YES you should get the gearbox serviced. My W211 (2009) 7 GTronic at 36,000 miles, but i believe the later 7 GTronic boxes had a longer service interval. Your local MB dealer or a good Indie should be able to offer definitive answer in respect of your vehicle specifically.

If not serviced the main issue is the conductor plate inside the gearbox failing requiring replacement which is expensive.

From what I've read MB have changed their minds a couple of times on this from sealed for life to once only at xxx miles to every xxx miles. The general opinion seems to be service every 36,000 / 70,000 miles depending on which version of the 7 GTronic you have.

The bulk of the service is changing the oil and filter and here there's a little catch, depending on the gearbox it may or may not be straightforward to drain the torque converter. as the gearbox and torque converter share the same oil you really need it all replacing so its worth checking on that. If its not straightforward expect a small premium for the additional time and obviously additional oil.

I'd also suggest you leave this to a good Indie or MB dealer as you'll be on the on-line electronic service record system and you should get the gearbox service recorded on that.

If the local Indie hasn't got a good rep ask around, worth editing your profile to indicate your general location.

Hi,
Make sure that they drain the torque converter when they change the oil. It is a bit of extra work and means that more ATF is required but then the job is done properly. I understand that the default for main dealers is not to include the TC. That will be about 5 litres of ATF whereas the full change is 9 litres. The sump bolts are single use stretch bolts so they must be changed too.

Did my own Oil/Plugs/Air Filter/Break fluid/fuel filter/Pollen filter genuine parts £160. Merc wanted £450.

Very notable the old oil looked like the very basic spec oil. While i got the best branded merc spec oil for my car. Which added quite a extra to the cost.

not should. NEEDS TO BE SERVICED !
If you don't service it in time, you risk damaging the torque converter or the gearbox.
i didn't service mine till about 125k , when i did the oil and filter were very dirty.
i recommend service at every 60k miles or 3 years.

As mentioned earlier, I had mine done last week. Cost was about £200 (had an mot done at the same time, total cost was £250).

They reckoned that not all the transmissions have drain plugs on the torque converter but mine does luckily (7G) so they were able to replace that fluid too.

Also think about changing transfer box oil on ml and gl
