Can I have 2 working foglights rather than 1?

I have noticed today while doing my weekly wash, wax, etc that I have only 1 working fog light. Have had the cluster off and there is a bulb (it's ok) but did spot that there is 1 less wire going into the left side than there is on the right. Am guessing the car is only wired for 1 working light.

Can I change this easily so that I have a rear fog on both sides?

I think it is against the law. RHD drives have one fog onthe drivers side.
LHD have on the other side .
Saying that in my last peugeot as soon as i took it from the dealer i stuck in a bulb so i had 2 fogs as the wiring was there.
Merc though has one less wire, i think.

Really, I didn't know that. My Laguna has 2 working fogs at the rear and it's a standard spec mid range model.

Its not against the law. I have converted a few to 2 fog lamps before but there is really no need. The single lamp is sufficient.

Do agree after all how foggy does it get in the UK and even when it does its not more than for a couple of days, well in my area anyways

Think back to just before Christmas last year, Heathrow airport was closed for a few days due to heavy fog.

I have to agree, I always found it strange that Mercs only had it on the one side. Like others have said, my Toyota has them both sides.
I did wire up the extra one on my old w123/200 years ago. :)

Years ago we had fog lights allowed on both sides, not any more, I thought it was an EU wide rule. Of course they allow old cars as they were.

The point with two rear fog lights is that drivers get confused assuming the driver in front is applying brakes.

I'd double check your current rules too.

It might be a 'Mainland' European rule, but I don't think here, I know I've mentioned the Toyota, but there are many others with twin rear 'fogs'. And the Avensis is only produced in the UK I believe.

The problem i sometimes have is having lived in europe for a while i tend to keep mixing the driving laws up with the UK.

Yup you can either have a single foglight on the offside, or lights both sides. There are regulations that specify how far they must be from the brake/side lights too.

Good idea to wire up the other side - then we can cause twice as much annoyance to other drivers by having the foglights on when there is no fog

(Sorry, this is one of my main hates, people who don't understand when foglights are required and when they just dazzle people behind)

Foglamps aren't just for fog.

Really..??

Don't say they are for rain as well, just to really dazzle the following drivers..
A bit like a motorbike on high beam did to me on Friday.

Why do they think they can do that, it left me with spots in my vision. Maybe next time I'll swipe them off and say I couldn't see as I was dazzled..

Yes they are for rain as well, especially recently where on the motorway during the day, visibility can go down to a couple of hundred yards. Cars ahead become invisible. I always use fogs in those situations.

Motorcyclists use headlamps all day because there are people on the roads who just don't pay attention, and a broken back is more painful than a dented wing :)

Well you shouldn't. Not only is it illegal it's downright antisocial to following drivers. Causes really bad starburst vision.
I bet you're glad the driver in front of you isn't doing the same.
At least I take it if I come up behind you you won't be offended if I test my high beam for a couple of miles, will you?

No objection to dipped beam, but why do they think highbeam is acceptable?

If this is such a problem they should invest in some DRL's. Saw a bike with them fitted on Sunday, much more effective than headlamp.

It's illegal to use fog lights when the visibility is over 100 metres.

I knew this site was full of guys that know what they are talking about.
It seems to be the trend nowdays to drive with the front fog lights on all the time, they should put an add on the telly to let people know they are breaking the law, to put it mildly (they are a bloody pest)

Agreed, but being stuck for 10 miles behind someone who insists on dazzling you with their rear fogs because it's drizzling slightly is even worse!
