car is reg in N Ireland

No.you can not buy/get a numberplate after the vehicle was first registered, older yes, newer no.
Emm! Yes you can,I've done it,in NI if your car has a English plate and you apply for your free local plate transfer you get the latest plate regardless of the age of the car!

Thats the reverse but is another reason that I would think it would would be possible here.
How is it done by you guys presume very similar process

It was done at our local dvla office over the counter, this process has now changed and everything has to be done via Swansea,so I'm not sure, but as the NI plate is dateless they seem to be popular in England (with people letting on their car is brand new on a "personal " plate) you could sell the NI plate for £100 and use that to reregister your car and put the extra £20 for fuel!

true. if main dealer is selling over here all the checks will have been done

Interested to know why it would have put you off, if not buying from a main dealer?

Probably the same way that the English try to refuse our bank notes even though it says sterling on them?people are cautious when money's involved and if your not sure especially when buying a car you COULD get spooked by a "strange" plate!

Exactly

I take your point, but I would imagine when purchasing something as significant as a car, you would carry out due diligence irrespective of registration. Was this a special or unusual car OP?

I don't have any concerns as dealers over here such as Evens Halshaw are not going to do dodgy deals as there one of the biggest Uk car sales in the UK. Nothing special just the spec I was looking for.

As a matter of interest, what age is the vehicle?

D

So what you really mean, is that you want a non-NI reg so that people will know your car is fairly new. I don't really give a stuff how new or old people think my car is, but you do; fair enough. Put the NI reg on retention for £80, and the new age-related 'mainland' reg will be allocated for free. Then sell on the NI reg, if you can find a buyer; if you can't, you're still only about £100 out of pocket including the cost of buying the new plates online.

Why bother retaining the NI plate if you replace it? It's probably worthless once you've paid the fees.

I've bought two cars from NI now, one of which was new and on NI plates. I've put personalised plates on it, which I will retain when I sell the car. At that point I don't know whether the original NI plate will be reissued or if it will be given a more specific geographical and age related plate. If the car had originally been registered in England, it would almost certainly be reissued with its original plate.

Hi MD5 so when you put personal plates on your car have you been issued with retention certificate's for the Irish plates?

Go on the dvla website and ask for an age related plate.
It may take a while to get a reply, but they are the people that.
But you'll get the correct answer to your request.

its a 2015
I wonder what impact changing the car from a NI registration will have on the MOT status of the vehicle. As you are no doubt aware OP, the MOT system is different in NI, with cars and motorcycles requiring MOT once 4 years old, not 3.

So, now you're an expert in what happens in this part of the UK. When I got my car 2 years ago it had a current NI plate not a 2005 plate.

I live in Belfast and if we get a car with a English,Scottish,Welsh, plate on it we can get it changed to our local plate free! Why? Because it then makes it recognisable for the anpr system the police use,
Some English dealers buy NI plates because they are dateless
All UK plates are recognised by ANPR in NI it would be daft if otherwise.

No. I could have requested one for the £80 fee, but I didn't see the point, as it wasn't an interesting number. As said, ordinarily the original reg. no. would be reissued when p/plates are retained, but I don't know if this is the case with NI plates that have crossed the water to reside.

I think there is a process for re-registering an NI plated car to a mainland plate of origin if it has moved there, but why not give DVLA a call tomorrow? I've always been impressed with every dealing I've had with them.

All it would mean is a car that goes to live in the rest of the UK which is older than 3 years and younger than 4 must have an MOT on arrival in the rest of the UK...simples.
