Mercedes CLA 180, 1.6 petrol 2013
Hi, I’m currently having issues with my Mercedes CLA 180, 1.6 petrol 2013. The engine light came on last night and started flashing. My exhaust seems to sounds blocked, can feel misfiring and rough idling. I’m assuming it’s the catalyst converter that needs replacing but am unsure of how to find the correct one to fit my car. Can someone advise me on this please. Thanks in advance.

Your best bet is to get the fault diagnosed properly before playing 'parts darts'. Especially given the cost of a new cat.

An independent specialist with STAR can do this, or your could try and have a go DIY by buying an iCarsoft MB V3.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I’ve previously had it diagnosed and received codes : P042000 and P233627. However mechanic advised me “you can still drive until it gets worse, it’s not a big problem for now”. It’s not a few months later and it’s a big problem now. I’m having trouble finding the right catalytic converter to fit my car though, I don’t want to go buying any and then taking it to garage tomorrow for it not to be the right one. I can’t ask mechanic today as most of them around here are off for Boxing Day. I’m from West Yorkshire, uk, if that’s of any help

OK, but what engine does you car have? M271, M276, OM651, etc.

If you can get under the car, you will see a part number stamped on the underside of the cat.

This is what it looks like on a W204 for example:

If you can locate this part number, you'll be sure you got the right replacement part.

Thanks for that, I can’t really get under car right now but where will I find the cat, at the front?

And will there not be a casing under the car preventing me from seeing these parts?

Given that you’re unsure of both the fault (as fault codes were last read sone time ago) and necessary parts required for repair, then I would leave diagnosis and parts sourcing to the garage or mechanic who you choose to repair it. That way you reduce the likelihood of wasting time and money on wrong parts.
