Car starts when it shouldn't

My car developed a new fault yesterday.

Normally the ignition has 3 settings, ACCESSORIES, ON & IGN (start)
Now, the car starts as soon as the key goes to position 2, ON.
The time I started the car before this happening the starter motor 'ran-on' and I had to turn the car off and re-start. It was only an hour or so later I noticed the car was starting in the ON position.

Anyone any experience of this? Any suggestions as to the fault.

Its not the end of the world, just a bit annoying, the car starts and runs ok (for now)

Cheers, Chris

As above. A faulty ignition switch is the likely cause and it will probably be the beginings of the switch failing. Get it replaced asap as it could go kaput altogether and leave you stranded.

Thanks for the replies.

If I can find a second hand one with keys will that work?

Is it easy to replace?

Chris

More thoughts / questions:

I've searched a lot of the threads on the forum and they all appear to be posted as a result of the car not starting, steering lock getting stuck etc. Not found any problems similar to mine yet....

Anyway, given the key is still recognised and still starts the car it seems to me that there is a 'mechanical' fault with the switch (ie: contacting the 'start' part of the switch too early) and that if I removed the ignition switch I (or more likely my mate at work) may be able to fix it....

Reading through the Haynes, removal of the drivers side lower facia panel (underneath the steering wheel) would give you access to the barrel of the ignition switch. The facia panel looks straightforward enough but I'm unsure about the removal of the ignition barrel. Anyone any experience of removing this? Is it easy?

I am presuming that I will need the battery disconnected during the work, once its out can I re-connect the battery and lock the car? Or does it need the ignition barrel fitted? (ie: is there a seperate reciever for the lock/unlock function?)

Failing that, any ideas on the cost of new ignition barrel (EIS??) + keys + fitting at the stealership?

Cheers, Chris

Haven't had a chance to look at the car, it has stood for a week (useless in the snow).

Started car today to move it and the problem appears to have fixed itself......
