Cat removal?

Hello all!

I have a 1991 500E which is on its original cats, exhaust system.

I have seen a 6kw difference in power figures quoted for with and without cats. Will the engine definitely compensate correctly for the Cats being removed?

I know the theory says yes but I just want to check incase there is an odd control problem with them gone.

My son ran a Subaru Ipreezza without the cats, and yes performance will improve. But it must be reinstalled for MOT's or the car will fail, and if you get stopped by one of the road side checks, your car may be impounded Would you beleive, the pipe needed is called a decat Don't know what had to be done to the various sensors, lambda etc.

The car wont need it for an MOT as it's a 91. I know I will see improved power and economy but I know on a friends E39 M5 when his cat shat its biscuits (Technical term) the difference in pressure before and after the cat wasn't seen so the car went into limp home mode.

As I will have to cut the pipes due to the cat being integral in the main downpipes I don't want to create a problem that is expensive to fix.

I want my easy to fathom peugeot back

As far as i can remeber, there isn't a sensor after the cats on the 500e. Basically it will have no adverse affect on your engine by removing them but you should see an increase in performance (marginal though!)

I personally have new downpipes made up form stainless steel to the centre box. Doesn't cost too much, and its dead easy to put the cats on at a later date if you want to.

I was thinking of having flanges made so I could bolt them back in at some point but i'll see what the guy doing it says, he knows his beans.

It says 6KW which is nice but the little extra noise and economy will be the main benefit.

I've had them removed from my SL, better sound and def more responsive. They were removed, nothing else was done/altered.
