Cats...

(Bloomin' diesel indeed) If ever tractors were fitted with the latest QUIET CDI technology the poor wildlife will be decimated when all the insects, mice etc get run over when they fail to hear the 'purrr' of the economical mean, diesel thrashing machines. :)

Me touchy?

Noisey diesel indeed :D
Kind regards,
John

Case, Ford/NewHolland, John Deere, Steyr etc have been using CDi engines for some years now. All ECU controlled just like cars, and just like car manufacturers they sell different models with the same engine with different power outputs, so there is a market for 'tuning' these to.

I operated or drove? a Claas Lexion combine harvester for a season, it had an awesome V12 variable output CDi engine, the computer screen showed the power output and reserve power available, it usually ran at 400hp but could muster upto 600hp when required, it didn't have a CAT as far as I can remember.

Back on topic  , I will find out a price for CATS on Monday, this is our prefferred supplier Fuel Parts UK

Hi Jimmy,
I would be grateful to hear the price of the 320CDI CAT's

Meanwhile back off topic :D The Worlds biggest oil tanker has a single CDI derivative type engine that propels it. I hope no one thinks I am seriously criticising anyone about noisey engines.

Regards,
John

Ahhhhh ....

you watched the documentary on the 'Hellespont Fairfax ' too......

I thought it was just me that watched those sort of things...

Guy, what would happen if you just replaced the cats with a straight through pipe, i did this on my CRX and it didn't make it appreciably noisier... would there be a possible power increase ?

howard - um - emissions???? I'd love a free power increase...

It didn't used to affect the emmisions on the CRX ...... it went through the MOT once and then had a pipe in place for the next one and no one said a word ...... ;) the cat sapped a lot of power from the CRX, taking it off offered a noticeable improvement !

You might get away with it ...

Re-after market cats

Yes, but has anyone been happy with the performance of these British made cats made by the likes of Timex? They seem much nosier than those supplied by the likes of the German company Ebberspacher as OE.Lets have some feedback on this. Personally I have no faith in cheap and cheerful British engineering !

Re- gutting, theres no need for opening up and welding, I used a sharp metal rod to smash out the honeycomb and outer glasswool padding. If you shine a torch in you can see the front of the cat has a welded in perforated metal cone so you can only gut the cat from the back end after removing the tack welded wire plate.

george fraser did say cheap aftermarket ones were 'tinny'...

OK - anyonw de-catted a big V8? or this sort of era car?

Last time I looked the lack of a catalytic convertor was a very serious offence, as you are breaking environmental regulations.

Certainly is other countries, removal of the cat from a car that requires one from factory can result in fines running into tens of thousands of dollars.

I was recently quoted £660 from a local Exhaust fitter for a cat for mine. Cats Direct quote £330, bit of a difference isnt there. Just bought a back box and intermediate box for the grand sum of £80 inc vat. Nice to have friends who work for Bosal.

Just as an aside

I was down at my local independent a couple of days ago and he had a CAT sitting on the reception desk.

I asked why it was there and he said that he had just taken it off a customers car which had had the CAT replaced 12 months ago....the honeycomb inside had broken up. He had a piece sitting by the side of the CAT

I asked if this was common and he mentioned that as a company they now refuse to fit aftermarket CAT's as the quality is nowhere near as good as the Benz originals and they were fed up with having to pay for new replacements at his company's expense . He mentioned that most of them are tinny and start to rattle within 12-18 months and that a couple of cars have had engine problems as the honeycomb breaks up and then ends up getting sucked back into the engine.

Personally, I have no experience of replacment CATS, but post this as it may give another side to the story and knowing my Indi (top man!) as I do, I can imagine that he's learnt from being stung a couple of times.

I imagine like most things that there are good and bad, and the thing that determines the difference is the price.

hmmm - dronsfields have one from a 38,000 mile old car - 370 quid + vat + 15 delivery...

Always find out why the CAT failed before fitting a new one, CATS fail because of a reason, usually engine management problems.

the pics of the cats from the discount cats site look wrong - unless they are just library pics...

Sorry, but didn't know what yours are supposed to look like!

As I said, use them as a benchmark to compare other prices.

Also, they quote for steel and ceramic monliths...explained here...

http://www.cats-direct-shop.co.uk/technical-information.php

They claim steel monoliths (sort of like cotton wool) are more durable - which sort of makes more sense as ceramic = more brittle (imho).

Best of luck - Les

Guy, sent you a PM.

Glojo, nobody we deal with in the aftermarket CATS department has a lkisting for the 320CDi, not the 211 or the 210!! So it does not sound like it's a common failure. That does not mean that nobody does it, I would be surprised if Walker, Bosal or Timax dont list it.

Guy,

Sounds like a good price for a Genuine MB part in good nick - But...

I would be very inquisitive before purchasing - ask them exactly what sort of car it has come off (ie, why was the car scrapped).

Large impacts caused by heavy accidents can often cause problems with cats (internal cracks etc). You don't want to end up back at square one in a few months.

I must admit that I would be tempted with a genuine MB one (albeit secondhand) over a dubious replacement.

I am sure that some of the pattern part ones are ok, but I know of some that sound really, really bad (so tinny that it ruins the driving experience)

Good Luck, :)
Will
